tips on unhooking Blue Ox Sway Pro?

I have the Blue Ox sway pro and I'm having a very hard time unhooking the chains. When I pull the pin and rotate the piece that holds the chain, it almost always springs loose and hits my hand that was pulling the pin. I'm already jacking the tongue up a lot to try and release tension, but this is still happening. Does anyone have any tips on this? I'm nervous that I'll break fingers. Thanks.
  • You don't have to hold the pin all the time. Pull the pin, start the unlatch process and let go of the pin.

I am new to the sway pro as well, and still getting the feel of things. I raised my truck at one point to where the back wheels were barely touching and it still had a good deal of tension. 1500 lb bars. Thought maybe I had too much tension going, but when I relaxed it a link, the front of the truck sat up about 3/4 inch higher than unloaded, so I went back to the previous link.

It tows great so I'll manage. It can be a pain at first.

I also had the problem with the wrench hitting my propane tank covers. First time my hand got caught between the wrench and tank cover. Not nice. Good thing there was some flexibility there.

  • Yep, try to get the truck lined up straight. But mostly you're just not raising it high enough with the jack. Raise it high enough, and you can literally turn the latches by hand.

EDIT: I had done a little vid for a fella on another forum showing how if I have jacked the tongue up high enough, that I can release the brackets by hand:

  • 1) Try to be lined up better. Even a slight turn angle will add WAYY more load to the outside bar.
    2) Raise the jack more
    3) Hold the bar like your hand is a crab claw. Then when it snaps over, it won't touch your hand.
    4) Only moe the bar slightly when you release the pin, then rotate it more after your pin-hand in clear.
  • Instead of using the wrench that comes with the hitch, I use a long handled ratchet (half inch drive) and a socket, with a four inch extension.
  • How long of a bar are you using? Maybe go to a double length bar so you have more leverage as you release. You could find something at Home Depot or any hardware store for cheap.

You can try to jack it up even higher. The higher you go the less tension will be on the bars. I jack mine fairly high, well beyond the stock height of my truck. When I undo my latches they rotate fairly effortlessly. Also make sure the spot where you're unhooking has the truck and the trailer on the same level with each other. When the tongue dips, extra tension is put on the bars.
