Toliet Flush Pedal - Issue or Design?

In my 2008 Keystone trailer, my toilet flush pedal lifted up to fill with water and down to flush it all away. On my 2015 Keystone 30RIPR it only presses down to flush it away. Is this a random issue with my toilet or did they really take away the filling feature on the flush pedal?

"Quite common"? :h With Dometic and Thetford being the two most common brands of toilets used in RVs in N America these days I've never seen one that introduces water into the bowl by pulling up on the foot pedal. Since you seem to believe this style of toilet is "quite common" it shouldn't be difficult at all for you to show us. :W

I have had 2 that you could lift the pedal to add water. The pedal was on the side of the bowl rather than the front. You put your foot under the pedal and lifted. It could get tiring if you were filling the bowl a few times to dump but at least you know the bowl would fill and not empty if you pushed a little too much. Not sure of the toilet brands but the trailers were a Canterbury and a North Trail that had them.

I had a dometic that was an up to fill and down to flush
1st was 2009 Laurentian Ranger 190xp (written off in 2011, water damage)
2nd was a 2000 Keystone Sprinter 315BH

We had this type of toilet in our 2002 Sportsmen. I didn't think anything of it until we upgraded in 2011. It took some getting use to not trying to lift the pedal and working your foot 'half way down'.

I prefer the up/down operation.

I would like an up for fill and down for flush petal. The half way petal can be tricky.

Not sure of the model number but the Sealand porcelain toilet that is in our 2004 trailer has a foot pedal that you must lift up with your toe to add water to the bowl. It is very easy to do and only requires a small lift with the toe of the shoe. If barefoot I will reach down and raise it by hand. Pedal is on the left side of the toilet and the bowl. Ours looks exactly like the left picture in the manual.
click here for a PDF of the manual that states you must lift the pedal to fill the bowl with water.

Here is a quote from part of the manual.

"To add water to the toilet lift or raise the flush lever until desired water level is reached. Generally, more water is required only when flushing solids.

2.
To flush toilet push lever all the way down until contents leave toilet bowl. Water flow pressures vary at different locations, therefore holding the flush lever down for 4-8 seconds may be required. We require a minimum flow at the inlet of the toilet of 2 gpm (7.6 lpm) for proper flushing.

3.
Allow flush lever to snap back, which permits positive sealing around the flush ball.

4.
A small amount of water should remain in bowl.
Note: Holding flush lever down longer than necessary results in excessive water usage."

I merely asked for a link so I can learn about what we're talking about here ... never have seen one, would like to understand how they work as it sure seems awkward to me to have to lift up on a foot pedal in order to introduce water into the bowl. That's being "salty"? :h

Soundguy, I had one, too as I mentioned a few posts back, so they do exist. Not sure why you seem so salty about the fact that they do exist. As RavensFan24 mentioned, the trailer I had was also a 2008. So it is possible they are older tech.

Here's an example of a Dometic toilet with the raise to flush feature: http://www2.dometic.com/1120e2de-1894-452c-a650-79d362d45359.fodoc The manual mentions it on p6. Though it's not a foot pedal.

This Sealand 3200 is also not a conventional gravity flush toilet either but rather an electric flush toilet. The OP claims he had a 2008 toilet on which he would pull up on the foot pedal to introduce water into the bowl ... I've never seen one, wasn't aware such an animal existed, and since they're "quite common" I'd like a to see a link to one ... IF it exists, as it sure seems it would be awfully awkward to operate.

My new trailer has a Thetford and you do push the pedal down slightly to fill and all the way down to flush.

I will admit that there is a VERY subtle difference between filling and starting to flush. Not at all as forgiving as my 2005s hand flush style toilet.

In a quick search, I came across this link and some old forum posts on random RV forums talking about lifting to flush. It seems it's an outdated technology, so "these days" is probably accurate for them being hard to find anymore. That makes sense to me since My '08 trailer had the lift to flush and the MH I rented was a 2000 model year. Otherwise, I haven't spent much time in other RV's....just my own.

Apparently, even toilets evolve. All this talk about toilets has reminded me how much I liked my old porcelain toilet and how I might have to upgrade to an elongated porcelain set up.

All I know is that all it takes for one to malfunction is a small clear runaway cap from a shampoo bottle under the foot pedal. Won't tell how long it took me to figure that one out. :r
