Torklift Talon & Stable Load Review

This is a long overdue review on Torklift Talons and Quick Disconnect StableLoads. I received the new aluminum Talons as a replacement for my original steel Torklift tie downs. I can't say that the Talons are any more or less secure than the original tie downs. During an eight week trip through Kentucky, the Smoky Mountain National Park and North Carolina inlcuding a trip through the Tail of the Dragon highway which has 318 turns and switch backs in 11 miles the truck camper did not shift in the truck bed. The real advatage to the Talons is the all aluminum construction so I don't have to worry about rust.

The Quick Disconnect StableLoads do help with side to side rocking and the over all ride with the camper loaded. Some people have indicated that they make the ride rougher with no laod on the truck and I do notice that a little bit it's not too bad. The advatage is it's easy to disengage them using a 3/8” ratchet and extension.

The other advantage to all of this is knowing the excellent customer service and warranty the Tarklift has on their products.

I recently acquired a stock 2004 Dodge 3500 4x4 with dual rear wheels. It has upper and lower overload springs. It also has stableloads on the upper overloads.

I do not think the pads contact the upper overload leaf on the unloaded truck on all Rams. Mine does not. There is about 1-inch travel before the stableloads contact the upper overloads.Unloaded. Unloaded, my Ram has what I think is an exceptionally smooth ride. I have not loaded my 4200 pound TC as yet, so I can't comment on the loaded.

  • Funny thing I have noticed in postings and it seems to be MFG specific with the upper stableloads. With the Fords in the unloaded configuration there is a 3-4" gap between the overload leaf and the pads so the ride is unaffected. The GMC and Ram posts seem to indicate that the pads still contact the upper overload leaf in the unloaded truck.

Lower stable loads are alway in contact with the lower overlad leaf and main spring pack unles you swing them out of the way
  • I have StableLoads, I love them. No bags, and I'm hauling a pretty heavy setup. My overloads don't touch when empty, so a stock ride when I'm empty.
  • I too have Stableloads and wasn't all the impressed with what they have done for the ride. Yes they do help with some sway and squatting however after the airbags, only a sway bar will help with real side to side sway
  • I've just added Stable Loads to an '08 3500 Dodge long box Quad Cab SRW, The ride unloaded was worse, it had been a sweet riding truck. It still wasn't terrible. With the camper on, an Adventurer 810WS,the ride was good. While the handling improved, I'm ordering a sway-bar tomorrow.
