Towing with a Tahoe? Please help with numbers.

Hi all , can you guys look over these numbers for me?
Surveyor sc225t Hybrid.
Dry Hitch Weight 425 lbs. (193 kg)
Unloaded Vehicle Weight 4,173 lbs. (1,893 kg)
GVWR TBA (TBA)
Cargo Carrying Capacity 3,252 lbs. (1,475 kg)
Exterior Length 24' 7" (7.5 m)
Exterior Height 10' 5" (3.2 m)
Exterior Width 96" (2.4 m)\

Going to be pulled by my 2008 Tahoe 5.3 v8 flex fuel 2wd 3.42 gears, tow rating 7100. Hitch max 600. Going to put a equalizer on it. Also putting a tranny cooler in the Tahoe.

Just a little afraid of the length? With a Equalizer should I be ok against my tail wagging? :0

Something is mechanically wrong with your Tahoe or your expectations are really high.
Sounds like you would be happier with an MDT to handle that 3200 lb. boat....
    You were kidding, right?

What we don't know here is the year of the Tahoe he's talking about. We had a '95 Burb with 3:42 gears and it did OK towing our old 17ft hybrid trailer (GVWR 3500#), but certainly not great. And it struggled through mountains with that small trailer. On the other hand our Trailblazer with the I6 was a far better tow vehicle than that '95 Burb, and towed that trailer through mountains without difficulty. In '96 they gave the V8 a HP and torque boost.

With a 3.42 rear end I would not want to have a fully loaded SUV and a loaded trailer and go into the mountains with the rig.
I am having a hard time believing this. I have 3.73 in my four banger and pull a 4400lb box and it does quite well. Was there an issue withbyour particular vehicle?
  • Wintersun,, I can't believe that your Tahoe wouldnt pull 3200 lbs of boat! Did you have the v8?
Also am I right that if you use a WD like the Equalizer the hitch rating goes up to a 1000? Because it says 600/1000 and something about 10,000 on the hitch?

  • Unless your a family of 300 pounders you'll be fine. I towed a 23' Rockwood hybrid with our Tahoe 5.3 for quite a few years without a problem at all. Ours actually had more weight than your numbers.
  • If you add your unloaded weight, to the CCC, you get a GVWR of 7425. That would put you over your tow rating of 7100.

I doubt you will be loading 3200#s of whatever in the trailer, but just be aware that you may be closing in on your tow max.

The length, and height may push you around a little in a gusty wind, but that would just be a good time to drive a little slower.

It seems do able to me.

  • If it were mine, I'd do it...with proper hitch equip.
Don't over load the Tahoe with passengers and tons of gear.
  • Just double check your hitch rating for tongue weight. 600 may be without WDH. But, wi the proper hitch setup, quality trailer brake, you should be fine.

Here is a good writeup. It goes into excellent detail about cargo, passengers, and tongue weight.
