What is normal for 5.9 water temp?

I getting 145ish on dash temp gauge. I get 135ish with IR temp gun on water pump housing. I think it should be more? Thinking about it, I wonder if T-stat is open all the time would cause this or is my thinking wrong? Fluid is OK. Rad cap is OK.

I'm beginning to think my 2001 dodge 5.9 is falling apart. This happened coming back from trans shop:E

Just look at them side by side, the Cummins stat is a very nice HD unit.

I would expect reading external metal temp of the water pump would result in a far lower temp than actual water temp.

FYI good choice. The non factory stat will give you trouble. I replaced one in my 98 3 times before I payed up. Slow learner.
If it is fun, the State of Minnesota will try to outlaw it!

IMO the Tstat don't make much of a difference, I mean the OEM Cummins part only lasted that few of miles anyway. How bad can the RMAN be?
Now the water pump is a different story :W Cummins only in my book just because it's soooooo hard to replace :W :W :R 😛
Kidding aside the RMAN pumps are c**p.
Either way you can recover the coolant easily with the Tstat, the pump is a bit more of a challenge unless you have a bunch of buckets.
Personally I just replaced mine before they went south this year on it's second coolant change.Dang the guy who bought it was indeed a Lucky Buyer!

I did put in the $$$ one. If you type in that part number, some postings on different forums as to why so much. In tech manual looking up spec on bolts they make reference to "quality commercial" t-stat. New t-stat looked different so had to confirm by engine number.
And Anyways...this might help you later, if not already done. Cummins NW keeps track of what you bought back to 1998. I've have 2 pages in their computer over the years. Today they gave me a "account number" and under that they have a space and added my engine number of 5.9 and the Onan serial number and what spec that's in my class C. Now if I need it they have it on hand and more importantly, I can call them when out of their area to get info if needed. I think they go south to Medford (all most CA line) and over to MT. At any rate don't have to go thru the hassle especially on Onan and what spec and model and number etc. (Don't like their prices though)

All good now 185-190

Hey 'path1'

Have you changed that coolant before......

At 15 yrs you should be on 3rd coolant change

100K or 60 months is 'schedule' for that HOAT coolant.

2nd gen just use plain old green/yellow anti-freeze.

Forgot 3rd gen didn't come about until 2003 :S

"Only 87,000 on an 01??? You don't drive it enough!!!"

100% correct. 3 miles from work. That was a before retirement. Used to take it out on weekends to give good work out. Now that I'm retired it gets to go to work pulling wives trailer around.

"Radiator hoes clamp, your starting to sound like Fish!"

Just sort of irritating to me that so many products are advertised to "walk on water" when most people know manufactures claims are mostly BS. The latest that caught my eye is the Willow leaf thing on TV. Supposed to cure knee problems. How can a flashing led plastic thing do anything with knee problems?

" I hope you replaced the Lift Pump with an aftermarket, and a Fuel pressure gauge, and never see below 14 psi."

Fass system with led low pressure light in dash. But I think it only lights up if fuel pressure goes under 5 pounds. Full gauges and egt probe stuck in at hottest spot.

YA, Price floored me. First time t-stat has gone out. 87,000 miles on 2001. So far since 2006, premature failures include... fuel lift pump, water pump, radiator hose clamp. Doesn't include what I consider normal wear items. I'm not sure how long a t-stat should normally last.

YES, 15 year old truck...guys at work used to kid me that when I go somewhere, car crushers follow me around. Lots of miles left in this thing. Spent some time with a retired Cummins engineer, he won't part with his old mechanical 🙂

$83 !? Is it made of gold????

$16.95 for a thermostat from Genos Garage.

YA, I should of checked out geno's. Always have had great service with them. Local NAPA also had cheaper t-stat. Geno's is where deep dish trans pan came from.

Is it made of gold????
