I have no idea why Cummins was so much. Maybe someone on here can tell. Cummins t-stat on right part number 3946849 and brand X on left. (pic from another site)
IMO the Tstat don't make much of a difference, I mean the OEM Cummins part only lasted that few of miles anyway. How bad can the RMAN be?
Now the water pump is a different story :W Cummins only in my book just because it's soooooo hard to replace :W :W :R 😛
Kidding aside the RMAN pumps are c**p.
Either way you can recover the coolant easily with the Tstat, the pump is a bit more of a challenge unless you have a bunch of buckets.
Personally I just replaced mine before they went south this year on it's second coolant change.Dang the guy who bought it was indeed a Lucky Buyer!

Hey 'path1'
Have you changed that coolant before......
At 15 yrs you should be on 3rd coolant change
100K or 60 months is 'schedule' for that HOAT coolant.
2nd gen just use plain old green/yellow anti-freeze.

YA, Price floored me. First time t-stat has gone out. 87,000 miles on 2001. So far since 2006, premature failures include... fuel lift pump, water pump, radiator hose clamp. Doesn't include what I consider normal wear items. I'm not sure how long a t-stat should normally last.
YES, 15 year old truck...guys at work used to kid me that when I go somewhere, car crushers follow me around. Lots of miles left in this thing. Spent some time with a retired Cummins engineer, he won't part with his old mechanical 🙂
