What kind of Caulk or Tape for this project

I am freaking out bigtime, 2014 prime time tracer. on the bottom of the side of the slide out there is a strip that goes along the side of the slide out...about three inches sticks behind the wiper seal and then comes all the way and touches the front of slide. I noticed one of the screws was missing on the end. so me being an idiot chewed off more then i can handle, i ended up taking off the screw next to it to get a better idea of whats under that strip.. i found another screw that will fit it.. but im not sure what kind of sealeant was under this strip.. it looks like butyl tape i belive but cant be sure.. it feels like putty... unfourtuntly i cant remvoe the whole strip because a few inches goes inside the slide and i cant get a screwdriver in there, so i can only take off half of it and apply more tape...
anyways what would I use under this to seal it? is it butyl tape or something else? is this a hard job? i have an apt next week at dealer to look at but rather not pay them %500.00 which im sure they will charge if its an easy fix, but i also dont want it leaking down the road... thank you.
  • So, what's new?
It's probably butyl tape and if you didn't remove any, just put the two screws back in or add in a third if there is a gap. When you're calmed down you can mail me $490 and continue along.
  • Butyl tape can be found in roll form at most rv supply stores or can be found online. It is very inexpensive. If the unit is new, you could probably reuse the existing if it is still pliable. Before reinstalling the removed screws, I recommend coating them first with an rv grade eurethane caulk (lap sealant) such as Dicor or Proflex. This will help ensure that water doesn't penetrate into the screw seats.
When removing and reinstalling any screws on the exterior I always coat or fill the screw holes with caulk before reinstalling the screws.
It is crucial with the molding strip you described that it is watertight.
