What would you change?

We just bought our first travel trailer (used) and we're really enjoying it. (2000 Jayco Quest. 24')
The RV dealer said that buyers tend to buy 2 trailers before they settle on the one they really like.
I have to say there are already things we'd love to have differently now that we've broken in our trailer.
Our dinette area is really big. Folds down into a queen, which is where the dogs sleep. (Incidentally, it's a bigger bed than ours, which is the bed in the back of the trailer. Spoiled rotten little buggers.) If we could do it over again, we would have gotten a small dinette (permanently mounted) and a sofa (that could be converted to a smaller bed.
We're okay with the bathroom, but it would be nice to have it a tad bigger.

What do you wish you had? (Or what would you like that would be different than what you have.)
  • I'm in the market for a small trailer.

Here's things I want, which are in improvement over my current RV:

    Sofa / Couch!
Purpose: Comfy sitting area when I'm stuck inside due to bad weather.
  • That statement is absolutely correct. Not counting the pop up we started with. We went through two campers before settling on the beauty we got earlier this year. The first a hybrid and the second an enclosed with large slide and bunk beds. On deciding our newest camper to make it worth starting a new payment I wanted the wow factor and the outdoor kitchen and large bathroom were what I wanted. The wife wanted shorter. I got the wow factor...and cab is about two inches shorter than our last lol.

We have a 60 gallon fresh water tank, 40 gallon gray tank and 40 gallon black tank. The gray tank always fills up first. If I could have anything I wanted in another trailer it would be a combined tank for gray and black. If the fresh water tank is 60 gallons, then the combined holding tank would be 60 gallons. I wonder why the gray and black are always separate? I always dump both in the same sewer line.

I can't speak to the motives of the trailer manufacturers, but I would hate that design.

We dry camp often and fill/empty our gray tank about every other day and use a tote to take it to a dump station. We can go a week or more without emptying the black tank, especially when we pee in the woods.

I don't want to have to worry about using a tote for black water.
  • Since I travel solo ( with just my small dog along with me ) I prefer a shorter trailer. My 19' trailer is the perfect length for me. It has a one slide out along the streetside. If I could custom design this trailer, I would add a second, opposing slide on the curb side. I would also eliminate the queen bed at the front, and turn that area into daytime living space. I would use the overhead fold-up bunk for sleeping. I'd modify the dinette area, eliminating the seating on one side, then move the table top into that freed up space, which would leave me room for a comfortable chair to sit at the table.
Other than the added slide out room, I may do all of these mods to my existing trailer. It will effectively ruin the resale value of it, but I'm not concerned about that as I plan to keep it long term.
  • We didn't like the uncomfortable dinette and wanted comfortable chairs. So we removed the dinette and replaced it with comfy swivel rocking recliners. Sometimes, you can modify your existing trailer.

We have a 60 gallon fresh water tank, 40 gallon gray tank and 40 gallon black tank. The gray tank always fills up first. Pretty much sums it up. Even though our kids are no longer camping with us (in spite of my sig!) we've found only maybe ONE floorpan we like better than what we have now. I'd like to think that's because we invested nearly 2 years worth of time thinking about how we were going to use our trailer, and then plenty of shopping at not less than 8 dealers.

The dealer's goal is quite different. They just want to get you in to a trailer - ANY trailer!

Oh, we did tons of research ahead of time. But, as we needed a used one in our budget, we because more limited. We also really wanted one this year (beginning of this spring) and we didn't want to wait until the PERFECT one came along and then miss out on a season of camping. Overall, we're really happy with our trailer. But some changes would be nice...

  • If we were to replace our TT, these are the things I would want to improve:

    More bunks
    Larger fresh and gray tanks
Larger master bedroom, or at least no wall at the foot end of my bed
    Another slide or two

And of course I want to keep a lot of the features I already have, while staying less than 3' longer overall and less than 7500 pounds dry.
  • People change trailers because things change. What we loved when the kids were little we didn't like when they got bigger. When they left we changed what we liked again. Grandkids, change again, grandkids gone, change again.
  • We have a very small (17') tt which we absolutely love. For the size, it has plenty of storage, etc. If I were to change anything, we would have a bed that is oriented along the trailer as opposed to across so there is room on both sides of the bed. We would have a couch so we wouldn't have to sit at the dinette all the time. That's about it! We knew what we were getting into when we bought it, and plan to use it until we retire. Then it's a slightly bigger tt for lots more traveling!
