Wonder if this would work? Idaho Tote

I was just wondering if adding an Idaho Tote to the back of a truck with the TC would work. The Tote would carry stuff, like a large Scooter, and it would provide a large deck on the back.

I am not saying I am planning on doing this, but just had this thought pop up.

  • A good friend of mine has one. Built well. I liked it. One drawback, it bobs a lot. Having next to no hitch length, it really bobs up and down over bumps - you really have to tie your stuff down.

In some states, it is considered a trailer. One big difference - he attached it to his 5'er. In that configuration, in WA and ID it is legal, Oregon it is not.
We're here in WA, it's legal, and he runs all over with it behind his 5'er. Within 15 minutes of crossing the Oregon border he was pulled over. Got off with a warning, got pulled over 2 more times before his trip was done. All with warnings.

I looked at these less than five years ago and could never get past the price. My 20' enclosed trailer cost almost as much as any of the swivel baskets. Originally, I was thinking I would keep my toy hauler and add extra toy space to the rear by using one of these without having to triple tow (illegal where I live).

I knew I was not going to do any severe off-road with my past or current RV setup since we have toys with more capabilities for that type of terrain, so the open deck idea went out the window for more covered secured storage although I do own a short flat bed trailer that has good clearance.

    Very good point!

  • Looks like the Swivel Wheel comes in a dual wheel model that adds an additional 200# to its rating. You can get a dual hitch mount that allows the trailer not only to swivel up and down but also side to side, nice if your doing some off roading.

I was thinking of getting one and put a large WeatherGuard aluminum box on it for extra storage along with our bikes. Probably still be room for fuel and the Honda 2000.

I bet you can tilt this on it's side to store it on the side of the house or garage.
  • The advantage of the tote over the trailer is that it does not require special backing techniques that some folks do have problems with performing.

One issue I don't like with the tote is the small wheels.

I don't like the single wheel because the wheel being in the center is where the trash like nails get knocked too. Plus when the road is rutted, the wheel is going to be wanting to flop of the bulge in the center.

However, both will work behind a TC just as they do behind a trailer.

If your Truck Camper has a lot of overhang in the back I think you will have a big problem connecting up the Idaho Tote...

This photo from MELLO MIKEs AZ home page will give you an idea on what the truck hitch extension would look like.

Of course the Idaho Tote does not connect up to a regular hitch but is attached to the bumper system and only the two wheels on tote swivels for turns.

Not saying it can't be done but would sure take some head scratching to make it work...

I would just pull a small utility trailer with regular trailer hitch behind the truck camper...

I always wanted a truck camper but my lifestyle of OFF-ROAD camping needs alot of storage space and my OFF-ROAD POPUP front deck and empty truck bed sure gives me some serious camping supplies room on my trips...

  • I don't think anyone has tried to attach a Tote to a hitch extension. That is the only thing I see stopping you other than cost.
  • WOW, I just looked at the prices for these things and had a heart attack... over $6K...

Anyways, they do have a picture of it attached to a truck.
  • Looks like a great option and wouldn't add weight to your payload capacity as it looks like pin weight would be minimal given the shortness of the tote. I guess the big question would have to be pin weight ultimately. I've pulled anenclosed 14ft v nose trailer with my current setup without any issues with about 3k lbs in it and this would obviously be much lighter than that.
