- navegatorExplorerGuess what Sonoyta is a customs check point for every thing that is manufactured, re-manufactured, or for the maquiladoras further South in the interior of Mexico that comes from Mexicali, Tecate or Tijuana, Lukeville is just a crossing point for the turistas, the aduaneros at this customs post are the most corrupt in all of Mexico, they make up the rules as the day goes.
I have been trying to find out exactly what is forbidden or a no-no in the next months, not much luck all that I find is meat, poultry, eggs a lot of chemicals that no one in their right mind would have and the regular tourist items that are meant for aircraft passengers.

Has anyone crossed at Lukeville in the last week or so, and what,if anything was taken? - 4X4DodgerExplorer II

Some of those restrictions are actually there to prevent infestations and plagues to migrate.
The best example.
Person smuggled oranges from Mexico to Southern California, some of this fruit had the larva of the fruit fly and the orange industry in California took one hell of a hit, for years we had aircraft flying in patterns releasing sterile male fruit flies, the millions of dollars that the economy and the eradication program is costing, all because one person did not heed a simple rule and a lot of persons have to pay for this, it has been years and this program of fruit fly eradication is still going on.

I have, for may be two decades, found these excuses rather bizarre. Fruit flies fly, no passport needed. For government to claim they migrated by smuggling is giving them way too much credit. Way too much. Same with the avocado restrictions. Pure protectionism and propaganda.
Fruit flies don't migrate long distances like some other insects and their life span is very short. This makes importation the most likey path of contamination. Billions of dollars are at stake, tens of thousands of jobs in many industries.
Anybody can understand that calculation surely. This is why CA is one of the ONLY states to have agricultural inspection stations on all the major highways leading into the state and everyone gets stopped and asked if they have any fruit or vegetables.
Now for protectionism: Its a valid reason to limit imports. I am willing to bet you are against unregulated migration from Mexico to the US...that boiled down to it's true essence is economic (jobs) protectionism.
As for Avocados...Mexican avocados are sold all over the country CA cannot supply the entire demand. - mexicorussExplorer II

The son of a good friend, works at a maquiladora that actually manufactures some parts in Tijuana that are sent to Guadalajara for assembly and then return to be transferred to San Diego, he has to go to Sonoyita at least once a week to either straighten out the shipments or grease the passage of items manufactured in Mexico from Mexican materials, the parts that come from the U.S. are always getting stuck in Sonoyta until bailed by a mordida "bribe".
DO NOT USE LUKEVILLE\SONOYTA

That's interesting since Lukeville, Sonoyta is not used as a passage for freight or commerce, only tourism. There is no commercial vehicles supposed to use that crossing - tepetapanExplorer

Last year at Lukeville they only took our beef. Pork & chicken was ok & nothing else. Has it changed this year?
The "beef" was directly because of the US not upholding the agreement with beef exports between Canada and Mexico. Although the US had lost 3 international appeals, they still would not abide by the NAFTA rules. You can find this restriction on any google search and it does make the US news a few times a year.
It is all about labeling the meat and protectionism. - qtla9111Nomad

Wow I guess you guys are right. Mexico a Nation with its own laws and regulations should cower to tourist dollars.......let's see, Tucson gets a ton of Mexicans every weekend of Sonoran shoppers to their malls. The Mexicans claim at the border they are just spending money in the USA for goodness sake, they should be allowed to take certain things to their family that live there, as gifts of course (damned be the law). So for the sake of USA tourism based on spending by foreigners they should back off of their super restrictive code of whats allowed and whats not allowed into the USA when it comes to border crossing.... Yeah works for me, let's see how that works for you. Mexico has the right to limit what is introduced into it's country, just the same as Canada and the USA, easy peasy figure it out. You cross into a different country and you have to do what they want, just like when I cross back into the USA.......don't be smug, its not about you, its about country sovereignty
Agree and some people just won't get it. Heck, what good is Mexico without cheddar cheese and maple syrup :h - navegatorExplorerSorry for shouting the last paragraph.

navegator - briansueExplorerAbout infestation - As a 48 state trucker back in the 80s I spent several years moving furniture - household goods - personal possessions. The economy at that time meant I did a lot of moves between New England and California. There have been restrictions at the California border for a very long time - no matter where you might be coming from. Back then they checked my inventory sheets - many pages - looking for things like lawn furniture and garden tools - mainly Gypsy Moth Larvae from New England - but other potential threats as well. They would send an inspector out to the residence at unloading time to check everything for potential threats. Today we experience checks at every border crossing into California as they ask if we are bringing any fruit or vegetables into California and the confiscate it. We are well aware of the threats and why this is done - some estimates say as much as 45% of all produce consumed in the US comes from California - protecting that agricultural region is important to us all. Trade agreements - or lack thereof - are an entirely different thing. We may never know exactly why but there are no-no lists going either direction at many borders.
