Best way south around Baltimore tunnel

We're heading south from PA to Williamsburg, VA next week and wanted to see how people get around Baltimore with a trailer. What I've read is the tunnel is off-limits while carrying propane on-board.

Looking at the map I'm thinking I95 south to I695 to the Francis Scott Key bridge, and pickup either I295 or I95 south of Baltimore. Does that sound right? Is 301 a good alternative to 95? Any other considerations for the drive to Williamsburg? This will be our first significant trip with the trailer, so I'd like to keep it as simple as possible.

Per Google Maps, 301 is about an extra hour over 95. And Rt. 13 is another 1/2 hour. Of course, that assumes you don't hit major traffic in Baltimore or DC.

does google maps include the 45 minutes-1 1/2 hour delay because of traffic tie ups? I-95 south of DC to fredericksburg is a nightmare.

It all depends on what part of PA your coming from??? East - Central - Western...

Where will you be starting from ?

    I had the same question.

Ok, with some stalking on their website. They mention that Jellystone in Quarryville, PA is "local", so I'm guessing eastern PA.

Given that, I'd go with the route proposed in the OP - 95 to I-695 S (on the east side) to I-95. Though, getting to 301 to 17 doesn't appear to be awful from where they may be. I dislike the idea of lights on a drive like that and would rather slab it, but to each his own. While Rt. 13 seems scenic, it feels like it's a fair bit out of the way.

I agree... BUT if a bit further west , they can take 83 down to the western side of Baltimore onto the western spur of 695..

    Agreed and good point.

Yes we have taken the FSK Bridge many times. Our last time down we took I78 in Penn to I81 south and cut over at I66 to Fredericksburg. Missed all the headaches and that's my go south route now. Tired of I 95 mess. Alternate route is to go east and south down 13 the Delmarva Peninsula and over the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge. that's a very scenic beautiful stress free ride

well don't stay on I-66 as it gets you into the DC area. get off on 15/17 to fredericksburg.

  • If you are down at the Bay Bridge Tunnel, you are going out of your way for Williamsburg.
301 is a viable alternative. You can take it to 17S to Yorktown. Or you can take it down to 295 to 64.
The easiest is definitely 695 over the Key Bridge and back on 95S to 295 to 64, but that is completely dependent on what time of day you are heading down.

I used to live in Annapolis and had a farm in Surry, a ferry ride across the James from Williamsburg. Heading south, if it was before noon when leaving Annapolis area, I could take 95S; otherwise I took 301. Unless it was Sunday. Sundays I could pretty much take 95S at any time. Unless there was a Redskin Game.

If you take 301S, at Bowling Green, follow the signs to 95S rather than staying on 301. At that point, 301 becomes one lane each way and, if your luck is as good as mine, you WILL end up behind a 95 year old man/woman going half the speed limit. For miles.
  • Yes. The Francis Scott Key Bridge is the way around Baltimore. But, route 301 is a way to completely bypass Baltimore.
Another route, and my favorite, would be to take route 13 through Delaware toward Salisbury, MD and continue down the entire peninsula and across Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. That puts you very close to Williamsburg. Much more relaxing and scenic. Lots of places to stop and eat or stretch your legs. Propane in the bridge tunnel is no problem. Just turn it off for the trip through the tunnel. The bridge tunnel is awesome!
