Bringing a gun, staying out of trouble in Canada

One thing to keep in mind is if you take and declare a firearm once into Canada, everytime in the future your license plate pops up, they're going to be asking about that firearm.....somewhere at the bottom of one of the websites it says the easiest way is to ship it....

Make sure you obtain and fill out the US Customs form (I don't remember the number) that proves you took the firearm OUT of the US, otherwise you might have a problem when you return. I think you're really supposed to have that form with any item over a certain value (camera gear, etc.) but my shotgun was the only thing I was asked about.

The RCMP Form 5589 applies only to guns that are otherwise not restricted nor prohibited.

Handguns are prohibited. Don't even think about trying to take a handgun into Canada. You will be arrested and your vehicle confiscated. The Canadians are very friendly and hospitable but I doubt you want to enjoy several years free room and board in Canada!

Finally someone got it right! Years ago, handguns with a barrel length greater than 4 inches could be transported through Canada; now No handguns can be taken into Canada.

A restricted firearm is:
A handgun that is not a prohibited firearm.
