Ca hwy 168 grade percent

Can anyone tell the grade percentage for California hwy 168 going to Shaver Lake? Also where does one find grade information on other hwy's?
Thanks.

  • An online map like Google Maps lets you zoom in to see all the curves. Between sat view and streetview you can identify the number of lanes, and see whether there are guardrails or cliffs that give the passenger heart flutters. These days, practically every paved road is documented at this level of detail.
  • Before you get to the four lane, there is about 12 miles of a narrow windey road. Done it many times but I don't like it. You can't get in a hurry. If you are going to Camp Edison it is worth it. Enjoy your trip. Betsy.
  • I posted earlier a link to Colorado passes that includes the maximum grade(s). I've also seen grade info on either the Montana or Idaho DOT sites.

Grade can also be calculated from contour maps, such as Google Maps with terrain mode turned on. For example on your route, I see that it climbs from 2000' to 4400' in 7.4 miles (mostly 4 lane), which is 6%. It continues to climb to 5600', but that doesn't look as steep.
  • Your best source is Mountain Directory West, as indicated above. It's cheap enough, 'specially if it keeps you out of trouble.

Here is a California site... CA Hiway stats but grades are not outlined.

Between Prather and Shaver Lake hwy 168 includes an 11 mile 7% grade. The lower 8 miles are 4 lane. Very few curves are marked. This is a very steep grade. There is a T intersection at the bottom. The upper 3 miles are two lane with very sharp curves. Along the side of Shaver Lake there are a few short but steep climbs and descents with very sharp switchbacks.
Above Shaver Lake hwy 168 climbs for 7 miles at 6-7% to Tamarack Ridge, el 7582'. This is a good two lane with 40 mph curves.
Between Tamarack Ridge and Lakeshore includes several short 6-7% climbs and descents.

Thank you very much, 7% I can handle, that's the info I needed. Do you know of a web site that give hwy grades? Again I appreciate your input.
