- Grit_dogNavigatorI think the bikes would be a good idea. Not the scooter. You want something you can push through the brush or lift over a fallen tree IMO.
Many people use mtn bikes to get back to good fishing areas etc. you can click off a few miles on a bike quickly vs hiking. Upper Russian Lakes comes to mind as an example. Everyone hikes 0-2 mi up the Russian to fish reds. There's a trail that goes back 11 mi. Easy to do on a bike. Not so much on foot, it's a backpacking trip then. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIThe sites are too far apart to see via bikes or scooters unless you're in cities. Sitesee as you travel. Have a great trip!
- rraabeExplorerMy main thought was to park the RV and travel to see sights on the bikes or scooter, but since it seems most sights can be seen from the RV driving, neither will be that useful. We don't plan to spend much time in cities, want to explore the out doors. Thanks for all your replies
- PA12DRVRExplorerIf you're into biking and have the room, no reason not to bring the bikes...but I don't think you'd really need either one nor, IMNSHO, will you get full use out of them.
Lots of places in Los Anchorage to ride both road and mountain bikes....the mountain bike locations won't work for either electric bikes or scooters...and, while I can't state with certainty, I suspect using the scooter on the Los Anchorage bike trails might not be an entirely pleasant experience.
Also, while opinions vary, my view would be that, unless mobility is a problem, it's just as convenient to walk around most places (other than Los Anchorage or Squarebanks) as it would be to use electric bike or scooter.
...but again, no real reason not to take bike/scooter if it is not a logistics burden. - tonymullExplorerYeah Anchorage has a nice bike system and Fairbanks has sort of one. I biked all over Fairbanks one summer when I lived there, but mostly you're using the sidewalks. But how much time are you going to spend in towns? No need to go all the way to Alaska to bike around a town. There are some trails you can bike, but many people have come upon wildlife too quickly in those situations. You don't want to surprise them. There are no bike trails along the Sterling, Seward or Parks Highways that I remember. Don't remember any along the Steese either....there are often ATV trails in the right of way but I think those are a bit rough for bikes.
- hr0082ExplorerI also noticed that there are lots of bike trails (many paved) that are at the sides of major highways. Many towns, such as Valdez, are very bike friendly. If you normally bike at home, I say bring the bikes.

Neither will be very useable. Once in Alaska you will find more traffic than you think and roads with no shoulders. Biking can be dangerous. I'd opt for the scooter of the two....there are ATV trails that parallel the road in some places but they are not suitable for bikes...maybe a scooter.
Disagree, lots of paved bike trails usually along the roads in most towns. Also, lots of side roads (gravel) with little or no traffic. We put over 200 miles on our bikes this summer. - gswcgiExplorerLast two trips to Alaska I carried a Honda Trail 90 on the back of the RV. Bicycles wouldn't have worked for us distances too far even with electric bikes. The trail 90 was great except in rain & mud (common in Alaska). Now I tow a Nissan XTerra 4 X 4, much better.
- resmasExplorerWe loved having bikes in Seward and Valdez. Easier to zip around on a bike than look for parking spots for the dually.
Bikes are handy in downtown Anchorage, too.
If they are easy to take along, don't add a lot of weight and don't take up storage space, why not take them. - Fer2005ExplorerIt really depends on how much you like to ride them. We talked about taking ours but decided against it because we were on a quick trip (kids needed to get back). The trip I plan to take in the future, 3 months+, we probably will take them. There are lots of places to ride in towns and its easier to park than a car, most of the time.
