Cashless Toll Roads

This is set up just like a traffic cam or red light camera. They really do not need you to be a resident of the state in which the "violation" or toll was not paid to mail you a bill. They will find you with the plate numbers on your vehicle then thru state registration systems.

When a bill arrives, just pay it and send a note with payment that you are a full timer and your mail has just caught up with you. If they really want you to pay the fine for late payment you will be arrested in some other state when a cop pulls you over for an outstanding warrant. The chances are very very small due to the cost to send you back to the state where you owe the fine.

No universal pass. EZPASS good east of the Mississippi except Florida where you need Sunpass.
Oklahoma has their own pass not compatible with ezpass or sun pass.
California I do not know.
In some states ignored bills become fines which can be a pia if you are stopped for any reason.

There is no "universal" E-ZPass type transponders yet, but they are in the works. I don't know if the date will get pushed back, but there is a federal mandate that all toll road electronic collection systems will be interoperable by Oct. 2016.

And some are just going license plate where locals register a method of payment. Got bit for a high "convenience" charge by Avis for a couple dollar toll n Dallas.

Vehicles here equipped with transponders are sent the bill. If you do not pay, you will not be able to renew your plates for the vehicle.

I have to laugh every time I see this. A system sophisticated enough to read plates or stickers on passing vehicles, then they use 19th century technology to bill you.

Maybe vanity plate on the front, bicycle on the rear??? just sayin... ST

We had one from Florida with additional late fees by the time we got our mail. Called them and explained that we were fulltimers and we only had to pay the original fee.

True indeed, and it's moving forward (although perhaps slower than we might like). We're in Florida right now and several state passes are recognized, including the Georgia Peach Pass. (I learned that right after I bought the SunPass. Oops.)

I'm still waiting for my bill in the mail from FL over 16 months ago. NC has the same type system. You would think their website would let you pay after you have driven by and they have your plate. But no, it says wait till you are mailed a bill, then you can pay.
