Chambersburg PA to Lancaster PA Amish Country

We will be on 81 North, should we take 30 East (cut through Gettysburg and York) to Lancaster?

Or...continue on 81 North to 76 East to 283 South to Lancaster, PA?

We will be towing the trailer and really don't want to stop in Gettysburg for sight seeing...just want to get to Lancaster, PA.

Don't mind the scenic route if it doesn't take twice as long.

Thanks!

  • Avoid traveling through Gettysburg into York and Lancaster. In this area 30 is a small road with two lanes - sometimes one in each direction and traffic circles through small towns. We used to do this and stopped. We now take 283 and it is a much better drive, especially with an RV, even one as small as ours.
  • My recommendation is I-81 to the PA Turnpike to the Harrisburg East Exit. Then take PA 283 east to Lancaster.

You can Calculate Your Toll on the Turnpike.

I travel in the Harrisburg area often. The traffic, while usually not that bad, can get miserable depending on the time of day.
And, if it rains, plan on sitting in traffic.

Spend the money and take the pike. JMO

US 30 does not go to Harrisburg. PA 283 will take you to US 30, north west of Lancaster.
  • 81 - 83 - 283 - 30 looks good and will avoid the small town stops through the Gettysburg route.

    Thanks!
  • Stay on 81 north to 83 south to 283 east to 30 into Lancaster or 81 N TO PA turnpike (76) to 283 to 30.....6 to 1, half a dozen to the other...one has a toll, one doesn't . There is some construction on 81 near Harrisburg but I have never had any trouble there.
