ereader

Thinking of getting hubby an eReader for christmas but have heard that some purchased in Canada don't work in the US. We travel to florida.

Any suggestions?
  • Can't comment on the Canada/USA question. However, I have a Samsung Galaxy 8 tablet and have the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook and Google Play Books apps. No issue reading books from any of these sources on this tablet. A wifi connection is only needed to download new books. Once downloaded, they can be read anytime, anywhere.

For free Kindle ebooks, check out FreeReadFeed.
  • The problem is your address. If you have a CDN address in your records with Amazon, then you don't have access to the same reading materials as those that have an Amazon US address. And I am not meaning E mail address...your actual Amazon records address.

And when you say E Reader...there are several brands. I use the Kindle White. has a backlit screen, etc. Even can do E mail. No movies tho. Just basic reading. To utilize Amazon, it has to be the Kindle. KoBo has it's sources. And some of them may indeed be the library. But..again..it has to do with your address. A person really wants to do research on which reader is best for them.

However, on Amazon, anyway...the list of free books is quite extensive and if you don't care for the one you are reading, dump it for the next.

  • My Kindle Ereader, though bought in the US, has worked just fine in the US, Canada and Mexico.

As a side note, you should also be using Prime for all of the free books. All it takes is a dozen free books to pay for Prime and then you get all of the other benefits basically for free.

  • Dont Ereaders use wifi? If so, as long as you have internet it will work. You should also look at tablets like the Ipad mini cor feature/cost comparison.
  • Well searching for why the Kindle Fire didn't seem to be available in Canada I came across these pages:

    Link 1

This one is a bit technical

I can't find anything saying that the Fire is unavailable in Canada so it may just be sold out. The Kindle Voyager, their top end reader, tablet seems to be sold out in the US and Canada. Since your husband would not start out with a US account but have a Canadian account in the first place he would not be affected by the problems mentioned in that first link. But it seems that some books may not be available in Amazon.ca because of quirks in Canadian law.

The only other reader that I am familiar with is the Barnes and Noble device, the Nook. And so far as I know B&N has not updated that reader in years. I know that using B&N is a lot more difficult than using Amazon. Someone gave me a gift certificate for B&N last year and it took me an hour or more to buy a book from them. On Amazon buying happens in a second or so and the book shows up on your reader in a few seconds.
  • The Kindle works fine, at least my Fire and Paperwhite both worked when we were in Banff last summer. The Paperwhite is best for pure reading, it gives you black text on a pure white background and is backlit so you can read in the dark as well as full sunlight. It does not work well for graphics or photos tho. You can store hundreds of books on it.

The Fire has a color screen and is much better for graphics and reading works fine on it too. Strangely Amazon.ca show all the Fire models as unavailable.
