- good_dogsExplorerYep. Actually 84 is only 22 miles longer and anytime I can bypass 95 I feel ahead of the game. Thanks.
Came up 81 to 78 today, no issues. A few rough spots but not so bad. At Cabelas in Hamburg for the night. Plenty of room, lots of grass for the dogs. Figure what we save on CG will be spent soon as we walk inside, and then some. - jplante4Explorer II

So much for Google Maps. Planning a trek from Lynchburg, VA to Cape Cod. Planned to follow the above advice and past trips to take 81 to 287 across the TZ and then - following google - connect to the Merritt Pkway. Good thing I checked. Way over the weight and tow limits. So I guess we're stuck with the lower route along I95? Looks like 84 goes way further north??
Also, the Merritt and Cross Parkways have low underpasses.
Believe me, taking I84 to Rt 9 south to New London and missing all that******on I95 will more than pay for the extra miles with reduced stress. Once past the New Haven construction mess, I95 is 2 lanes in each direction and if a semi or a Pruis gets in the left lane the road pretty much comes to a stop. - good_dogsExplorerSo much for Google Maps. - BillMFlExplorerJust traveled I81 from Harrisburg north to I84 and the road is extremely rough most of the way. I usually use I78 to 287/87. Sorry I didn't this time.
- kjenckesExplorerThe tolls doubled through that area as well over the past year or two. I priced out towing my boat to Maryland last summer. Double axle with SRW pick up was going to cost me over $100.00 just from NY to MD/DEL line. 81 south is the only way I go now.
- CroweExplorerI84-I87-I287-I78-I81.
This is the route we take. Avoids a whole lot of messes. It adds mileage, but reduces stress. Not sure how much time you have, but we often stop in College Park MD. That route also takes you by Cabelas in Hamburg, PA. Great place to take a rest. I'd also recommend getting off I95 onto Rt. 17. Saves a chunk and is a fairly easy drive. - jackshephardExplorerThank you all for the advice..Definitely have some homework to do.. I like the idea of bypassing NYC then through NJ and PA.
- jplante4Explorer IIWhen we head that way, we do I84 to I81 and pick up US50 out of Winchester VA to US17 to reconnect with I95. You miss NYC/NJ/DC and all that traffic. You don't have to go all the way to Scranton on 84, you can cut over to I80 and pick up I81 in Harrisburg.
An alternate would be I84-I87-I287-I80-I81 or I84-I87-I287-I78-I81. - RoadpilotExplorerThe only issue with propane is Baltimore as others have said. 695 gets you around that. Having said that, if you have a couple of hours more (max) I would recommend bypassing NYC, Baltimore and DC and take 84 in CT to 81 through PA then in VA take 17 to 95. Or you could take 84 to the Tappanzee and the Garden State to the NJP to 78 to 81.

Has anyone had trouble getting around Jersey/NYC with a travel trailer? I was told I can't cross bridges or tunnels there since I have propane. Figured once I get around that I can rely on my gps to get me there. I'll be leaving in late July. Thanks all!
I would try to avoid NYC all together by coming down I95 through Connecticut to 287 just into NY. Take 287 over the Tappan Zee staying right through NJ when it intersects NJ Turnpike.
This route will avoid I95 through the Bronx and the GW Bridge both of which are a nightmare with a RV.
