Garmin gps...2 questions

DW got me a garmin 2797lmt for my bday. Will this work OK in a class C with the cabover blocking the dash? And can you program a route in that you want the garmin to follow? ...tia
  • I saw a link to this outfit, and sent them a message asking if their info can be imported into my garmin and they said yes. I have a follow up question on how it does and no answer yet. But check here:

My garmin is a NUVI actually both are so I just may try it out or if anyone else has how does it work out?
  • My Garmin will pick some really strange routes. Last year it tried to route us over a Forest Service road. Do not trust your life or rig to the GPS. Always check the route with a map and make sure you know where you're going. My GPS has a simulation mode which allows planning when you don't have a satellite connection. I plan my route with a map and Google maps and put that into the GPS. Good Sam has a pretty good on-line trip planner which I use, also. Before trusting your GPS Google "Death by GPS".
  • Our Garmin will choose the route depending on how you set it up. There are some set up choices such as; fastest (usually will be interstate), least amount of miles, which can be the slowest way, or just start going the way you sort of planned and it will re-calibrate and send you on your way. The Garmin is a really nice user friendly unit. We have a class C and sometimes it Does have problems finding a satellite in the cab area. My wife will move back to the dinette table with it if we really need to know when signal is lost.

You more than likely have a keeper, and Happy Birthday!

  • Yes, to using it in a class C.
I have a 2797 and love it, a lot you can do with it.
If you go to apps and page down to TRIP PLANNER, then NEW TRIP you can set up where you want to go with stops or via's along the way.
Do yourself a favor and go into settings and set the calculation mode to Fastest Time, and Navigation Avoidances to avoid unpaved roads unless you plan on driving unpaved roads.
Also on your map screen you can have on the far right distances to various items of interest like gas stations, food or my favorite rest areas.
I have had the 2797 for about a year and I'm still finding new things it will do. I love the size, I can actually read it in the MH unlike the ones I've had in the past. The only issue I have with it is the bluetooth doesn't work well.
If you have any questions you can PM me.
  • As far as programming a route, I have to use a map to get a general idea of the route I want to take and then program my route in segments. My old TomTom use to try to take me 190 miles out of the way when I was travelling from Charlotte to Panama City. The only way I could get it to work correctly was to program my trip from Charlotte to Augusta and then go from Augusta to Panama City. Otherwise it tried to take me to Jacksonville FL and then west via I-10. I've had to do that to avoid big cities and routes with height and weight restrictions.
  • If you have it on your dash it shouldn't be a problem. I often times set up locations in my house and my desk is several feet from the window and I still get satellite reception. Not familiar enough with that model to answer about programming a route but reading it does say it has a multi-point route planner. I do something similar when I am traveling long distance and want to take a route different than default; I will select way-points along the route I want and then travel to each of those. Newer model may make it easier.
