Glacier National Park from MN, possibly Pacific coast

Just got our new trailer (35') and heading out west mid August. We are traveling from west central MN and plan to go through ND via I94. Glacier National Park is the main priority to see this year. I would love to see the Pacific Ocean by visiting Washington and Oregon but we only have 12 days for this trip. We are traveling from west central MN and plan to go out through ND via I94. That's about as far as I have planned things out so far.

We will be traveling with our granddaughter who will be 11 months old at the time of trip so even though she has traveled well so far I do not want to have super long driving days, probably no more than 400 miles. I do not mind interstate for making time but I do appreciate secondary roads if decent and more direct or particularly scenic.

As stated before, Glacier National Park is my priority as I want to ride my bicycle on the Going to the Sun road. I am not opposed to visiting more of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, or eastern Washington with our time also. We have seen Yellowstone so no more of that until she is older. We enjoy quieter campgrounds with electrical hookups and preferably the ability to dump tanks. I would also prefer longer sites or pull throughs for convenience.

So as I sit here writing this and add up number of days to spend in areas I see a Pacific coast trip would be lacking quality. That being said, maybe we should focus on Montana, eastern Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota on return? Leave Pacific coast for next year when she's older and make more of a beeline out there?

Any recommendations on routes, things to see, campgrounds, favorite or preferred sites in campgrounds or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

  • We decided last night to focus on Glacier. We are tentatively planning 1st night Medora, 2nd night Great Falls, nights 3-6 east side of Glacier, nights 7-10 west side of Glacier, 11th night Billings, 12th night Bismarck and home next day.

Any recommendations for campgrounds in/around those cities/areas? Looked at the KOAs but at $70+ per night gets expensive. We enjoy state parks but do want electric hookup and ability to dump tanks on way out.

Thanks to all who've chimed in so far.
  • I would say it's next to impossible to do both and enjoy the trip, especially with a child. As others have suggested I would concentrate on Glacier.
  • I did that trip a few years ago from the Detroit Lakes Mn area. I was meeting my wife in Glacier, she and a friend had taken the train and I was to meet her in Glacier. Since I was traveling alone I took 3 days to make the trip. I spent the first night at Fort Lincoln state park near Mandan ND. The next night was at the campground at Fort Peck MT. The next night I spent at a FS campsite at Maria Pass on US 2, then into a NP campground on the East side of the park for a few days before returning to the Maria Pass campground for a, few more days.

We made the return trip to MN via FS campgrounds in the Little Belt mountains, with a stop in Medora ND.

If you get a chance take the Red Bus tour.
  • You could go to Glacier NP and then continue on to Coeur d'Alene, ID. Then south to Lewiston, ID., then east on 12 towards Missoula, MT. Continue on 12 back to MN.

Lots of great scenery. A bit less then 4000 miles.

There are from US12 in Idaho.

  • Here is the link to the dinosaur museum http://www.tyrrellmuseum.com/
  • I say take a pass on the coast and concentrate on Glacier, up into Canada, Waterton and the Icefields parkway between Banff and Jasper. The coast is a whole destination in itself and not to rush. The granddaughter may find the great dinosaur museum in Drumheller Alberta interesting, not much out of your way.
  • What "Lauren" said: leave the Coast for another trip. There's plenty to see and to keep you busy for 12 days in and around Glacier NP.

Bring your passports and cross the border and visit Waterton Lakes NP in Alberta on this trip. Glacier and Waterton are connected and so are basically one park separated by the US-Canada border.

Lake Louise (and Banff NP and Jasper NP) is a complete trip unto itself from Minnesota. Drive all the way to Calgary and then head west to the Canadian Rockies.

From Minnesota save a trip to the Pacific NW and the Coast for another time as well. Too much to see and too many miles to travel to cram it all into a short 12 days.

    Enjoy Montana. We love it.
  • A bit of advice I put on here frequently - as do others. Don't try to cram too much distance and places into a trip!

We love Glacier and you have two sides of it to cover. The east side is laid back and more for hiking - and perhaps biking. The west side is the commercial side but also at least one nice but not overly difficult hike - Avalanche Lake.

Going To The Sun Road is amazing and should be done from both sides to Logan Pass - and some hiking up there as well. Leave early in the morning to drive up. Cycling has some restrictions on it.

Leave the Coast for another trip - trust me on that one.

Not sure what you are looking for in campgrounds. We stay at the KOA on the east side and North American on the west side.

PM me if you would like - have been there a few times.
  • My opinion, for what it is worth, is to enjoy your vacation in the Glacier National Park area. If you have your passports, take a few days and head into Canada to the Glaciers on the Canadian side, and take in Lake Louise. Otherwise, spend a few days at East Glacier, the KOA their is lovely, and tour the lodges on the East side, then drive down and around and spend a couple of days in West Glacier, which is more of a touristy town. But my choice, which we want to do again, is East Glacier, up to the Baniff ice fields.
With only twelve days, make the west coast a future vacation.
