Going from Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon

Is Highway 14 from Cedar City, UT (on Interstate 15) going east to Highway 89 suitable for towing a 24' TT?

TIA,

Bobbo

As we approached Cedar City on I-15, I told DW that it was her last chance to say she wanted the steep, no guard rails, switchbacks, scenic Route 14, after that we were committed to Hwy 20. She said Hwy 20 was fine with her.
  • We went up Hwy 15, turned right on Hwy 20, then headed through Panquitch. We didn't the tunnel route because we weren't sure we could fit ant then there were tight turns in the road. We were told the time would be about the same. Sometimes the backup for the tunnel is quite long.
  • Hwy 14 out of Cedar City is for sure a scenic highway, a whole lot of 5 to 6% grades until you finally get to the top. But if you wife is one of those why doesn't like high places with drop offs, this is not your road. Take Hwy 20#, it's further north on 15. Takes you over to Hwy 89, and then turn south to get to Bryce.

Are you under 50 feet? If so why not go east on Utah 9 from Zion to Mt Carmel?

I have a 17' truck and a 24' trailer for a total length of 41', but I don't want to deal with the long tunnel.

If you are coming from the north, 20 is a easier route.

Coming from the south, but we are looking for more scenic, as long as it is not TOO difficult.

Either take the park road east out of the park ( a steep climb but no downhill heading east) or take Hwy 20 (easier descent than Hwy 14). Do not take Hwy 14 unless you really enjoy mountain driving and are confident in your braking. With your small RV you can do it but just be aware that it's not the easiest of the 3 options.

While I *DO* like mountain driving, DW does not. My life might be better taking 20 a little farther north.

Another way that might be longer (not sure) but you can add in the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is to take Hwy 9 west to Hurricane, UT then pick up UT59 which become AZ389 to Fredonia, AZ then south to Grand Canyon or north on 89 to Bryce

That would be nice, but we spent almost a week at the north rim before coming to Zion. That would be backtracking.

You'll be fine, I've done it pulling double and I doubt your 64' long.

Thanks, but having DW curled up in the floorboard of the truck sucking her thumb the whole drive kind of defeats the purpose of taking the scenic route.

I appreciate all of the good information. I think HWY 20 will be safest for my marriage.

This is a very easy drive and scenic. If you enjoy animals, in Kanab, UT is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary which gives an awesome tour in a gorgeous setting. Also take in Coral Sands State Park in Kanab - beautiful color of the dunes.
