- TPUCExplorerReally is not as bad as people let on. If you hit rush hour traffic will be so slow that even towing you can easily run with any traffic. If your not alone HOV lane is your friend. It 30 mile out of a usually much longer trip. Take a deep breath and just go with it. You will make it just fine. FYI my Garmin GPS 1690 gets dyslexia in Atlanta it will tell you to exit right when you need to exit left. Very strange.
- jkmcmomExplorerIf you have a mouthguard you might want to put it in before you get to ATL. That way when you're clenching your teeth while you drive through the city, you won't chip any teeth and it'll help take the pressure off your jawbones.
Not sure what to do about the white knuckles from the clenched hands on the steering wheel. :) - HorsedocExplorer IIThe only other things I might add is> On Fridays it is usually busy from around noon until well after 6PM. Run with the traffic and give yourself some cushion on the vehicle you are following. Stay in your lane - you will get through pretty fast if it is not raining.
- jaycocamprsExplorerGo straight thru, always keep 2 lanes on your left.
- tegu69ExplorerI hate driving through Atlanta. Seems there's also a lunch time rush hour. Ideally I try to camp on north or south side on a Friday or Saturday night, then get up early and drive straight through town on Sat or Sun morning. Otherwise, I adjust my driving style to what everyone else is doing and hold on.
- Jim_ShoeExplorer III've tried every "trick" in the book going thru or around Atlanta. Going around on 285 just makes the misery longer. Going thru and staying out of the right hand lane doesn't work because it exits soon and you're back in the right hand lane again. 10 O'clock on Sunday morning doesn't work because not everybody is in church. I've tried following long haul truckers, but many of them are dropping something off or picking something up in Atlanta, so you lose your cover. I'm single, so I can't drive in the HOV lanes. And I can't merge because nobody wants to let a 'C' pulling a toad get in front of them. I've even considered going south in the summer and north in the winter, but that kind of defeats the whole purpose.
So I take I-65 south out of Nashville to Mobile and turn left if I'm headed for the panhandle or I-40 and I-26 out of Knoxville to I-95 and turn right for the Atlantic coast. I-95 has a lot of traffic, but they peel off as they reach their destinations. - TPUCExplorer

Works for us everytime - sch911ExplorerStraight through there are no restrictions.

BK - BillMFlExplorerMy favorite routes avoid Atlanta, but I have used straight thru, and both sides. I try to hit Atlanta on weekends or mid day, but its always a******shoot no matter which route you take. Been caught in dead stop traffic on all of them and not rush hour. All it takes is an accident and the back up can be horrendous. Other times you can shoot straight thru. Good luck.
