Hurricane to Mt. Carmel UT -- thru Zion or Colo City?

We are planning to drive from LA to the Bryce area next month. We are not going to stop in Zion, although we love it there -- we have been there several times. So this is the question -- what is the fastest way to get from the St. George area to the Bryce area?

We have gone through Zion and the tunnel -- not a problem for us -- and that looks to be about 45 miles from Hurricane to Mt. Carmel on Hwy 89. But on my topo program, I see a southerly route through Colorado City to Hwy 43 that angles up to Mt. Carmel, which looks to be about 55 miles total -- a little longer, but maybe faster?

Which route would you recommend? For this leg of the trip, scenery is not so important.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

  • I disagree on rt 14. I personally will not tow that road. I towed all of rt 12, but will not do 14. I15 to 20 is the way I would go.

Hello profdant139, Going through Ceder City (SR14) is a good route to use to cross over from the I-15 to SR89 to get to Bryce NP. If you can do the Zion tunnel you can do SR14. there are a couple of sights to see along the way, Navjo Lake, near by Cascade Falls and a small ice cave near Duck Creek visitor center.
  • I was going to say, if your going to Mt Carmel from Hurricane, to go through Zion. A little different what your saying in going to Bryce. We did day trip from Hurricane to Bryce this summer. Went through Zion on way up and took 20 and I-15 on way back. We came back a lot faster on return trip.
  • The route via Colorado City is an easy one. It does go right past Pipe Spring National Monument, which is kind of interesting.

Even though the map suggests otherwise, you don't exactly go through the town of Colorado City, AZ or neighboring Hillsdale, UT, nor are you exactly invited in. That's a polygamous community for a Mormon offshoot, and they don't invite a lot of scrutiny.

    :)
