HWY 17 from Sault Ste Marie to Montreal

We are going back east to a wedding next October in Vermont and thinking about taking Hwy 2 to Sault Ste. Marie and then cutting across Canada on Hwy 17. How is going through Ottawa and Montreal? Any places we should not miss seeing? Are RV parks still open? The wedding is on the 4th so it will really be traveling end of Sept. Thanks in advance
  • Take 2 to Wakefield Mi then get on 26 and cut across through Marquette to Sault and save a few miles.

The road is two lane to Arnprior then any where from 4 to 6 lanes thru Ottawa and Montreal. Avoid morning and evening rush if possible.
  • It's an attractive route.

What you see depends upon what you enjoy.

The Soo: Agawa Canyon Railway. St. Joseph's Island

Algonquin Provincial Park, Montreal from the shopping through the historic parts and nice restaurants, the capital city, of course.

    for a few.

There are recent changes as to how to get around Montreal.

My 2004 trip return was in late Oct. and I found cgs.

    The 417 is 4 to 6 lanes .

The 17 (174) is 4 to 6 within Ottawa area but is mostly 2 lanes (with passing lanes here and there) once you leave Ottawa for about 100km (60 miles) until it merges back to the 417 after Hawkesbury. It's a nice drive though and it's not that much longer than the 417 the whole way.
  • If you are ok with electric only Chutes and Voyageur Provincial Parks are both open until mid October. Both are very easy access to the highway and have some easy in and out sites for overnighting.
  • You might want to check out boondockerswelcome.com
and if there are locations close to where you will be traveling, you won't have to worry about open campgrounds.
  • 17 through Algonquin and over the top of Lake Huron is a beautiful drive - highly recommended (and MUCH prettier than going through MI). While much of it is two lanes, with occasional passing lanes, there's not a lot of traffic. Ottawa isn't too horrible (not like Toronto), but avoid rush hours. I've no experience with Montreal.
  • A couple of corrections from other posters. Hwy 28 is the one across Michigan, not 26. Hwy 17 in Ontario does not go through Algonquin Park. It follows North of the park. We were to all of those spots last month. I would rather take 17 than the trip through the Park. There is military museum in Petawawa, Ontario that is a free interesting stop. We saw nothing more than a squirrel on our last few trips through Algonquin on the main road only. Last year we even camped there a couple nights and didn't see any animals. We don't go through the trails because I use a walker.
  • Just remember that our Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October, (I am full of turkey as I type this), and govern your plans accordingly for shopping, sightseeing, etc.
