I-49 S of Lafayette to Belle Chase, LA?

Trying to see if anyone has traveled south of Lafayette, LA on I-49 around to Belle Chase, LA? We are headed that way the end of March, and really don't like the washboard on I-10 headed east. Are there any obstacles for a motorhome? Thanks for any advice...
  • Yet another dining recommendation...Prejeans Cajun restaurant located just north of I-10 on I-49. The management is RV friendly, good food and live Cajun music every night. While in the area, try some boudin (Cajun sausage). If you like back roads, just south of Broussard, La you can take Hwy 82 (old hwy 90) south that parallels highway 90. This road will be a slow ride through all the old bayou towns down to Morgan City, La. This route will give you a good feel of south Louisiana. Once you get to Belle Chase you should head south to Venice, go fishing and eat some fresh Tuna! Have a trip!

(Although I live in South Carolina, I'm from Lafayette and still work out of south Louisiana as a Tow Boat Captain.)
  • Another dining recommendation....Cafe Vermillionville on Pinhook Rd. in Lafayette.

The Landry's on I-10 between Breaux Bridge and Henderson is the only one of the chain we will eat at. During the week is better than weekends when the kids are serving.
We need to try the other Landry's. Looks good.
  • This is the future I-49 corridor / Hwy 90 it is slowly being raised to interstate standards, most is already divided 4 lane highway with few traffic lights. The worst part about it is lots of stop and go traffic on beat up surface streets for the first couple of miles after you exit I-10, once you get 5-10 miles south of Lafayette things get much better.

There are a couple of tourist attractions you might consider that are close to this route

3 that come to mind, The Tabasco factory tour at Avery Island (it is a bit of a drive down a dead end highway to get there though), Rip Van Winkle Gardens (good restaurant on site there, but limited hours, not far off the route), it is very near the edge of the Vermillion bay so they can grow lots of tropical plants you don't normally expect to see on the gulf coast. Also if you are hungry and like home style Cajun food stop in at Landry's cajun seafood in New Iberia (no relation to the Landry's national chain of fake cajun food) at the intersection of 90 and La 675 (the corner you turn at to go to Rip Van Winkle gardens), just watch the trees on the driveway, you might be able to park at the service entrance in back though.

p.s. taking this route you get to avoid all those 2-3 hour long traffic jams that tend to plague the Baton Rouge area so much these days (post Katrina Baton Rouge had a major population growth from displaced businesses out of New Orleans, but has had no upgrade to the road system).
  • Yes US 90 will take you to Hwy 23 and 23 will run you into Belle Chase.
Taking US 90 out of Lafayette to NOLA is a lot slower drive.
US 90 from Boutte to Westwego isn't too bad of a road. Flat and pretty straight. A few stop lights. At Westwego it picks up an additional lane each direction but the traffic is heavier too. There are also stop lights along the way. A couple of miles after entering Westwego the left lanes will go on an overhead roadway. If you go on that then you'll be out of the traffic lights. Exit 7 to your right goes to 23. One problem if traffic is heavy will be as soon as you get to the bottom of that exit ramp you'll want to cross 3 lanes so you can turn south on 23. It's only 1 block from the exit ramp to 23 South.
23 south is 4 lanes and traffic lights. Traffic doesn't move too bad tho.
When you get into Belle Chase there's a tunnel for southbound traffic.

    That is old US 90 which they are S L O W L Y converting to I 49 unless I am mistaken.
It has been nicer (last Fall) than I10.
While in Lafayette make sure you stop in at Randols Restaurant for good food and live Cajun music. If you can Waltz and 2 step you are good to go.

Thank you for this...so, are you saying that US 90 will take us all the way to Gretna (Hwy 23) south to Belle Chase? No tunnels or obstructions that you know of?

I-49 doesn't go south of Lafayette yet. Pretty much still I-10 to US 90. From Lafayette US 90 drops down to Houma then to Boutte near the 310 spur.
US 90 isn't too bad as far as road condition. Not as washboard as I-10 is in places. US 90 is limited access instead of controlled access like on an interstate system. It passes thru a few towns with the stop lights and slower speed limits. It's a lot slower going on US 90 from Lafayette to NOLA.
