I-5 or Rt. 99

We will be traveling north thru central Calif. early in Dec. We will be driving a motorhome and pulling a car. Which road is in better condition, I-5 or Rt. 99.
Thanks
  • We came down 99 in early NovemberIt was a slower trip than when using the I5 in previous years!
  • I switch back and forth just for a change of scenery when traveling to Sacramento to see friends. 99 has more places to stop and sightsee if your taking a leisurely drive. But going through more towns also means while traveling in the right lane you will have to deal with freeway entrance traffic on a regular basis. I-5 is just a long stretch with fewer onramps. Probably better just to take the I-5. Harris Ranch is the 1/2 way point, Harris as a sit down restaurant, or you can exit to the right for the fast foods. Fuel is usually expensive at that exit. If your not into the 380 mile drive from Sacramento to LA, the Almond Tree RV park (it now has a longer name) is a nice place to overnight, grass and wifi. CHP watches both roads closely, so if your towing keep it at the posted 55mph, you will find almost all of the trucks will stay below 60mph. Travel safe and Happy Trails.
  • Just drove I-5 northbound from I-210 to highway 46 at Lost Hills. Most of it was very rough. Constant thumpity thump most of the way. Not so much potholes but rather uneven sections that felt like I was on a dirt road with bad washboard. Numerous uneven patches that grab tires at times. I-10 westbound thru L.A. area has several similar stretches as well. It's California...not known for smooth highways!
  • We travel back and forth from Sac to Yuma 6 times a year and we much prefer I 5 over 99. In fact in two weeks we will travel I 5 back to Sac area then two weeks later back to Yuma on I 5
  • SR 99 has more places to stop, more towns, and is a little more interesting between Bakersfield and Stockton. Both will have heavy truck traffic. North of Stockton IR 5 is probably an easier way to get through the Sacramento traffic. If you travel SR 99 to Stockton there is the very easy to use Crosstown freeway connector to IR 5. Or take Eight mile road from SR 99 to IR 5. Very easy to connect.
  • Right now both are a construction mess. Going through Stockton I-5 & 99 both have const. work.
  • I-5 is smoother and has more lanes for most of the way. Unfortunatly both highways have alot of construction going on right now.
