Indio to Paso Robles

Looks like the drive from Indio to Paso Robles via the 210 to the 5 to the 46 would run me about 7-8 hr (with rest stops). That's pretty much my limit for a days drive. We were considering taking the 126 to the 101 but that looks like a lot longer drive time. How much longer would that drive take? I realize a lot depends on traffic......just looking for average times.

Thanks!

  • We're heading to Camp Roberts (just north of Paso Robles) next week from Aguanga (up in the hills east of Temecula and west of Indio). We're planning to drive to Lancaster and spend a night at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds before continuing up to Paso Robles/Camp Roberts. We don't like to drive more than four - five hours max in a day (we're old!). BTW - drove across the mountains to from Aguanga to Desert Palms/Indo yesterday. It was a breathtaking drive with the views and wildflower bloom going on.

  • All about the same, so many variables. Yes, the 210 then you could go on the 126 but it would be about the same if you take the 210 to 118 which becomes the 26 and meets the 101. The up the 101 to Paso. This way, or one the 126 you don't have to go up and down the Grapevine over the 5. In a car it is so much faster to take the 5 to the 46, after all you will be traveling at 70 probably 75 all the way in a car. In a Motorhome at 55 you will probably go over the 5 at 35-45mph, even if you could do better there will be trucks in the way. So the additional mileage on the 101 really doesn't count. So it really depends on your travel preference. If you think you will need a rest stop around Magic Mountain, then take the 5 and exit Magic Mountain Parkway, with a few nice places to stop for lunch. Then take the 126 around to Ventura. Otherwise, the 118 to the 23 to the 101. Then up the 101. Beulton, Solvang is a great place to exit and take a long rest. Lots of wide open street parking, Ellan's pancake house is total unpretentious but make a great meal, across the street from the windmill of Anderson's Pea Soup. If you need to overnight, Flying Flags RV Resort is a Resort, Wonderful. Then a lovely drive up the coast the rest of the way.
  • We've driven every possible way. We now take I-15 to 395 north, 58 west, 99 north, 46 west. It's about 25 miles further than 210/5 route but gets us out of the Los Angeles traffic faster. So much less stressful of a drive. Mostly open countryside.

Otherwise we take 210/5/126/101 route. I just dislike towing thru L.A. and will avoid it whenever possible!

My preference would be to avoid Hwy 5, just because of the boredom. I'd go through Ventura and Santa Barbara, unless the thought of traffic there is a problem for you.

Drive times could be all over the map, as you suggested, on either route.
  • It is only about 30 minutes different to use 101 according to Google. I suspect that is very time of day dependent.

I would go up through Palmdale via 138 if I was driving that route and avoid LA. We drive that way 2-3 times a year in the car and about once a year with 5er.
