- Wm_ElliotExplorerThat's an interesting story about the Marine. That part of the story was pretty well covered (up).

safe to travel in Mexico but if your ever kidnapped by the cartels or anyone down there or beaten than robbed
Apparently this guy is unaware that crime happens all over the US on a daily basis - prison are full and overflowing to prove it.
We have been going to Mexico for well over 40 years - never even the slightest hint of any crime in our personal experience. We have heard there is crime but we have not experienced it. In the US on the other hand............ - briansueExplorerSorry if this thing has drifted off topic but one of the trolls took it there so some of us who do know the facts sometimes feel a need to clear up fact from fiction.

So I can travel down there with my gun,
No - just as there are laws in the US that say some states do not allow you to cross state lines with a gun the Mexican gov't says you cannot enter Mexico without a permit - but you can get a permit - might not be easy but it can be done.
Try getting on an airplane anywhere in the world with a gun. Try going to most countries in the world with a gun. You will be seeing more than 5 months behind bars. - qtla9111Nomad

Besides I travel with a gun and in Mexico that is automatic jail time expect for the hundreds of thousands of drug cartels, they get a free pass..
Wow, having lived here for more than 30 years, this is all news to me.
So I can travel down there with my gun, is that what you are saying, what about that marine who spent about 5 months in jail for the same thing and took almost a act of congress to get him free..
Never said that. I was referring to your first paragraph. You know little or have been mis-informed by news media.
Although one fact most people don't know is that a Mexican or permanent Mexican resident like myself, can own a firearm for self-protection at home.
Many Mexicans own guns for hunting and that is another permit. We have many shooting ranges around our area where people go and do target practice. Hunting deer is very popular here in the winter season.
Being informed about Mexico and the reality is as important as knowing about other North American countries and their laws and customs.
Many Mexicans believe that all neighbors to the north are drug addicts and kill many people because guns are so readily available. That is not a true statement but media and internet promotes misinformation.
I hope this helps clear up any misundertanding. - briansueExplorer

You should really research the facts on that one. The guy was guilty as sin. His Mommy tried to get him off by lying her brains out. Facts were all recorded on video. He parked his pickup on the US side and walked over in the morning - checked into a hotel (hotel receipt etc. all recorded online) - visited with his girl friend - went back over and got his pickup from the parking lot and started to drive across - had three fully loaded weapons within easy reach of the driver - when stopped by the red light he jumped and ran and climbed a roof an tried to get back to US - all on video - then tries to claim PTSD - his passport showed he is a regular crosser to visit his girlfriend - lots of records - lots of proof - check the facts - don't listen to his Mommy. The squawking from Mommy got him out but he should have stayed in prison. He was and is a criminal. Get over it. - timmacExplorer

wow...some mean people here. If you are scared... you are scared. Don't go. I just think "some" people worry about it as I did and it is not so dangerous as anywhere else.
Sorry about the trolls. When I recommend to you on Escapee Forum to visit here I forgot about the bad postings from the trolls. Let it roll off like water on a duck as soon they leave and you will get more positive posts from RVers who really do travel Mexico. WELCOME!!!!

If you are scared... you are scared.
I think we are all scared of lots of things. Fear. Brave is not giving in to fear. Then you learn there was really no reason to be afraid. Or you don't. Glad you all took a chance and found out it wasn't that big a deal. Now the thing we fear the most is not having all our papers in order when we cross the border. The rest is a piece of cake. So if San Carlos and Mazatlan worked out for you the next time you will be experienced and will go further and have more adventures. The weather and the water get warmer the further south you go. Mazatlan is still too far north for many of us. There are many great adventures to be had. - briansueExplorer
you have never gone,
Maybe have never gone to skool?
