Need route advice from FL to Albuquerque

I am planning to drive the Suburban and 23 ft TT from Sarasota FL to New Mexico and SE Utah next September thru October.
Although I've driven I-70 twice to Denver and beyond, it was from Washington DC and I'm not familiar with the more southerly routes.
Once I get to Albuquerque I'm either going north to Moab Utah and then following a southerly route down to Page Az, ending back at Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival,
or, I will go from Albuquerque to Page and then north to Moab, finally back down to Albuquerque for the Festival.

Anyone have any ideas or advice on routes?

  • When headed west on I-10, be sure you switch to I-12 shortly after you cross the Mississippi/Louisiana line. It will save you 60 miles unless you want to go to New Orleans.
  • Ah, I see that going back and re reading the post that you are already considering taking US-191
  • Well if you are going to Albuquerque and then on up to Moab; you are possibly considering taking US-550 N to US-64 W to US-491 N.
If you take a slight detour taking US-160 W off of 491 this will take you to 4 Corners where you can stand in 4 different States at the same time. Continuing west for a short distance you can then take US-191 N back up to US-491 N. This route will take you past the Mexican Hat and also through the area where Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump filmed his famous scene where he stopped running. If you do go this way and want to stop where he stopped running to take pictures be aware that you have to keep a sharp eye out because there are no markers telling you that this is where he stopped. As you are going north the spot will be behind you, there is a nice place to pull over to take pictures.
  • We run out to Colorado most summers, so go the same basic route as far as to Amarillo, Texas. I like the general route spelled out above by sdianel except I stay on Interstate 20 going through Dallas. it stays far enough south of the main parts of town, that I have never had any real traffic problems there. We often try to time our overnights on one side or the other of Dallas. West bound we try to stay at the Blue Bonnet RV in Terrell Texas and this go through Dallas at mid morning. East bound coming home to Florida, we normally stay at the Amarillo RV Ranch Campground and this puts us going through Ft Worth and Dallas in mid afternoon. Sometimes spending the night after Dallas in Baton Rouge (KOA)or Breaux Bridge at Poche's Fish Camp and RV park.

West bound, we stay on I 20 till we get to Ft Worth, then cut NW on Hwy 287 which is a nice 4 lane highway to Amarillo, then we cut on up to Dalhart and to Raton NM and go north into Colorado. Once you get to I 40 at Amarillo, just stay on I 40 west bound to Albuquerque NM. In the summer time we find this southern route helps keep us out of tornado alley, most of the trips.
  • The weather can be unpredictable in October, we've had snow here in Albuquerque during the Balloon Fiesta, and up to the northwest of here aka Moab, so I would suggest the northern route earlier then back south. Have a great time at the Balloon Fiesta it is an awesome experience no matter how many times you see it!

  • Getting out of FL: We usually take Suncoast Parkway (toll) to US98 west to US19 north to I-10. Take I-12 around New Orleans. In Lafayette Louisiana, we head north on US49 to I-20 at Shreveport. To bypass Dallas, at Tyler TX take US69 north to Greenville TX, then west on US380. Take US380 west to Decatur TX, then north on US81-287 through Wichita Falls to Amarillo. At Amarillo, pickup I-40 west to Albuquerque. If you need campground recommendations, let me know. We go to Decatur TX every year and up into Oklahoma. We have a Class A towing a small pickup.
