Need th stop at Km21 Nogales?

Ok, so I have my 10 year TIP for the truck camper via online and post. I needed to specify which crossing I would be using and nominated Nogales. So do I need to stop there on the way through or can I bypass this piece of Mexican headache?

Cheers

  • OP. at Km 21 beyond the border, you are not really in the "headache of Mexico" in Nogales. If it were Mexico City, you might be, but you're not. But there are problems even at this stop, so stay alert, know what's required for you and your conveyance. Apparently you don't need the hologram stuck to your window, although some are suggesting how to get around a broken windshield (I've replaced two windshields and simply carefully removed it to a piec of plastic while the new one was installed, then reapplied it, its still almost perfect. And no one has ever looked at it. It runs out of years this year and I still use the motor home but don't think I'll be returning.
  • Finally someone other than me answered the question. Don't stop anywhere unless you need more paperwork. We, too, walk across the border, usually at Tijuana, and get our FMM's. That way, with our 10 year permit, we don't have to stop for anything!
  • We get Out TIP on line . We obtain Our Immigration Permit at one of the several walk across Border locations ,often Algodones or San Luis!
Then We have no reason to stop at Km 21 unless We get a Red Signal at the actual Inspection Station further along the Road!
  • I have posted this before. I use the following system for any window decals; Provincial Park passes and Mexican Holograms. Buy a small piece of Plexiglas. The thinner the better. You can cut by scoring with an Olfa knife. Mount your decal to the plexi and use a small dab of clear silicone to mount it to the windshield. If you break your windshield just use a plastic knife to cut the silicone and voila. You are good to go.

  • Better still, if possible, do not get the windshield replaced til you get back into the US.
  • Should a windshield crack, take clear packing tape and place it on the out side covering the decal, at least an inch over and use the same tape inside before the glass is removed, once the glass is clear from the frame it can be broken in such a manner that the decal is preserved, present the glass and decal at the border crossing.

  • Yes you will need the tourist card. You should have received a temp sheet, with the TIP, that you exchange. They will want to see the TIP as all 3 (incl passport) get tied together in the computer. See https://portalsat.plataforma.sat.gob.mx/aduanas_cpitv_internet/index.aspx. Enter your VIN and see if anything is in the system yet. Did you get away with registering your truck & camper as an RV. You usually can when you do it online.
  • You still need to get your immigration papers (Visa - FMM) there and pay for that - I have never understood the reasoning for getting some paperwork ahead of time when you still have to stop for other paperwork and customs. Maybe I am missing something. Maybe you can get FMM at a Banercito further down the road? Passport? We keep learning new things and changing the way we do things. Haven't found a realistic way to bypass customs etc. We do get a 10 year but if we are not sure if we will be using the same vehicle again we turn it in. A cracked and replaced windshield when up north can play havoc with paperwork next crossing.
  • Why do you have A TIP for your TC? I know that one person on this forum sometimes advises this but a TC is NOT a vehicle. It does not have wheels. They may issue one but you could have troubles in the south of Mexico. Technically a truck camper is merchandise not a vehicle. Some Aduana inspector might wonder about this and then tell you that duty is required. Those who get the TIP for campers are opening up a whole can of worms and one day it will backfire. Aduana in the south operates differently than say at Nogales. They have horrible job with all thew smuggling that takes place. Some Aduanero that has had a bad day could just seize the camper and send you on your way. Did you also get a TIP for your Truck? That is 100% required as well as a deposit that must be claimed within 6 months. If you get a new FMM or let your existing one expire you lose the deposit.
