New Caney going S thru or around Houston - route??

We'll be staying in New Caney, then heading for Rockport. I will be driving MH pulling a toad, and have a problem with heights. I really prefer not to be driving a house that's pulling a Jeep on a flyway, especially in big city traffic. Happy to pay tolls if it keeps me closer to Mother Earth. If you're familiar with Houston metro, would you please suggest a route or two? Thanks!!!
PS - Have done a search and didn't find what I need.

  • Does anyone have input on highway 6? we've read all the posts and appreciate the input on 59 through Houston, but we're towing and long. We are thinking of taking why 6 north from 59 and go all around to 59 on the north side. Any input is welcome.

Cut West from US 59 well North of Houston, totally bypassing it to US 77, then South on US 77 to Victoria, Texas to pick up US 59 again. That's the way I go to Rockport, Texas all the time.
  • One more suggestion:
Use a real-time traffic service so you know what the conditions are. I've used Houston Transtar for years. They have an app for your phone.

More recently I've switched to Google Maps for traffic conditions.

I don't go thru or around Houston without checking the traffic first.

As a native Houstonian who currently lives in the New Caney area and has driven Houston traffic for over 50 years, I think I can address your question with at least some expertise.

Don't leave New Caney before about 9:30 a.m. That should give you the least traffic and get you through Houston in just over an hour.
Drive straight through on US-59 - at least until you get to 288.
As mentioned earlier, there is construction at 610 and 290 that could slow you down, and 610 between I-10 and 59 has the heaviest traffic in Texas. You'll be better off if you avoid loop 610 altogether.
I have an easypass and use the beltway often, but I can tell you that if you take Beltway 8, you'll just pay to drive farther. It almost never saves time when traveling from one end of Houston to the other.

The option of 288 to 35, versus taking 59 to Victoria is strictly a matter of choice. I personally prefer 35, but my wife prefers 59, so guess which way we usually go.

I drive from Orange, Texas to Rockport several times a year. I take this route. Driving 45-50 MPH puts me in the not to slow and not to fast route. Through Houston and down 59 about 9:30-10:00 A.M.. Haven't driven 610 in a while but it used to be terrible with speed demons cutting me off.

  • 59 south 8east/south 288 south 35 south. Leave New Caney about 10 am. Not a bad trip once everyone is at work and off the road

Texas 2 lane secondary roads are better and wider than a lot of main roads in a lot of states.. Not a bad trip once everyone is at work and off the road.

Houston and Atlanta are the new Chicago and LA.
  • Howdy!

As stated above you're better off timing the traffic between 10:00am and 2:00 pm. If you don't care about the tolls take the beltway 8 but you can pay to set in traffic at times. The 610 is under construction around the 290 area and can be problem recently. I personaly would just drive straight throuh on 59. Once you get through the downtown 288 area you good to go.

  • Agree with the 610 to 59 to Victoria. Can't emphasize enough: early am or midday. Early AM could be well onto 59 by 7AM.
  • First of all I really hate driving thru Houston...almost as much as I hate driving in Philly...the drivers are but heads the road terrible and usually crowded. Traveling thru with an RV is especially trying cause no one will give you a break. So that being said the most important thing is to do it on non rush hour and if you can on Sunday.....I have always traveled in and got on I610 and then stayed on it till I get to the hwy I need. Yes it may be shorter going straight thru and most cities I do when it is non rush hour but not Houston.... We go to Galveston a lot and that is what I do....in your case get to the 610 till you get to 59/I69...just have patience and get in the lane you need early cause they won't let you over......Did I say how much I hate traveling thru Houston?????....
