  • I recommend you use the 118 to get to the 210, then turn south on the 15. This will give you minumum traffic. I lived in Van Nuys and worked in Northridge 25 years.

  • A few more tips: both Sigalert.com and google maps offer real-time traffic info -- they sometimes differ from each other, but it is worth a last minute check before deciding on a route. And if you have a savvy navigator riding shotgun, that person can look on a smartphone and call an audible (as they say in football) so that you can jig and jog and take alternate routes as needed.

Try to travel in the predawn hours -- that is the only uncrowded time here.

Listen to KNX 1070 am radio on the 5s -- 1:05, 1:15, etc. They often have last minute info from the CHP or Cal Trans that does not show up on Sigalert or Google Maps for another ten minutes.

Isn't this fun? Welcome to So Cal!! And say a silent prayer for those of us who commute through all of this every morning and night.
  • My favorite will take you an extra 30 miles but it is well worth it. Take the 118 to the 210 toward Pasadena. When you pass the Rose Bowl start heading into the extreme right lane so you don't miss the tunnel to continue on the 210. Then take the 210 all the way to the 15 split to San Diego. This is a less traveled route, but it still is like molasses at rush hour. We usually leave the house after 9:30am.

    Extra miles, shorter time.

Otherwise just go straight down the I-5. However there is a lot of construction as you approach the Disneyland area, with concrete T-rail on both sides. I got hit by a thrown pebble last month and still need to seal the windshield star.
Don't take the 405. You can never estimate the traffic going into Westwood, and often it will just crawl all the way to LAX.
    Happy Trails.

  • Because of the unreal amount of traffic that uses I-5, it's always under construction. By the time they finish one 10 mile section, the next one needs fixing etc. etc....your question is about traffic...use the 210 bypass...it's the least traveled....at the moment.....If you don't want to go all the way to I-15, take Ca57, south off the 210 and it'll take you right back to I-5 just south of Garbage Grove.....Dennis

  • Definitely use I-5 instead of the 405. The traffic will still be heavy, but not nearly as bad as the 405.
