Prince George BC to Northern Mn

Our Alaska Caravan will end in Prince George the first week in August and we don't need to be anyway until second week n in September, northern MN. I am looking for ideas for route and things to do along the way. We have been to Yellowstone several times already. Can't decide if we should come across on the Canadian side or drop down on the states side. Ideas?

  • Another route to consider is to head west to Prince Rupert and take a BC ferry day sailing through the inside passage to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, then head south to Parksville/Qualicum Beach. A 2 hour drive west from Parksville gets you to the Tofino/Ucluelet area and Pacific Rim National Park which is one of my favourite places on earth. South of Parksville, you can take a ferry from Nanaimo to the Lower Mainland (Vancouver) area either to Horseshoe Bay, or to Tswassen. Or keep going south to Victoria where there are three ferry route options-Sidney to Tswassen, Sidney to Anacortes, Washington through the Gulf Islands, or Victoria Harbour to Port Angeles, also in Washington State.

The possibilities are endless from VI, so I won't elaborate. I am familiar with all of these routes, and all are absolutely worth a look. The downside is the cost of the ferries.

The trip thru the icefields is spectacular in places, and I highly recommend that as well. Whatever route you choose, BC will not disappoint. Have fun!

from prince george it is a beautiful and easy drive on 16 to mt robson, to jasper then the icefeild parkway to banff. from there east to calgary and south to waterton national park (the canadian part of glaicer) then 35 miles south to glacier.from glacier its not that far to the black hills. it is gods country enjoy
This is also what I would recommend, having done that route, just in reverse. Plan for more time in Jasper than in Banff. In summer Banff is packed with people and very difficult to negotiate with an RV. And be sure to stop at Lake Louise on your way from Jasper to Banff.

In Jasper, don't miss visits to Maligne Canyon, Pyramid Lake, Athabaska Falls, and up the road to near the top of Mt. Edith Cavell. If you can get a reservation, try to stay in Whistler's campground at Jasper.

If you have time to spend a couple of nights in Lake Louise, spend one day driving over Kicking Horse Pass on the Trans-Canada Highway to visit spectacular Takakkaw Falls, with a nearly 1/4-mile drop, and the overlook at the Spiral Tunnels of the Canadian Pacific Railway to watch a train or two negotiate the total spiral.
  • There are massive forest fires burning currently in the Williams Lake to 100 Mile House area, which is south of Prince George on Hiway 97. They don't appear to be slowing down any right now but by the first week in August, we sure hope they are. So in planning, it is probably a better shot to go east from Prince George, rather than south.
