Redding CA to Susanville CA

Leaving Redding Friday to Susanville to Reno (not towing).

Would it be best to take 44 out of Redding to Susanville or...

Go South on I-5 and pick up Highway 36 at Red Bluff over to Susanville?

Want to make good time on the road.

Thanks:)

  • Took 44 from Redding to Susanville this morning. Good road. A little frosty on the road in some parts, not bad.

    Thanks!
  • 44 to 89 to 36 is a good route, just remember there is some open range area and occasionally can see a cow on the roadway. Probably the way I would go from Redding if weather is not bad.

36 is not bad as long as you are in a car. Not my favorite in bad weather. If weather is good it is not bad but the road is a little windier.

70 through Feather River Canyon is a favorite of mine. Would definitely go that route if weather gets really bad.

As coolbreeze01 points out just don't be in a hurry and watch for ice.
  • From Redding, I would take 44 but not get in too big of a hurry. There may be patches of ice out there. Have a smooth trip.
  • Thank you everyone for your replies. We are checking weather and taking advice on going 44 if weather is good and 70 if bad weather.

Had a little sprinkle of rain here in Redding last night...much needed.

    Thanks again!
  • If the weather is nasty just go south to SR 70 and cross to Reno. It is the lowest pass in the area across the mountains. Friday the weather should not be bad as in major storms. Probably any route would work.
  • The high point on 36 is at the junction with 89 (south entrance to Lassen), about 5600'. I encountered snow around there in a late May storm. I think 44 around the north side of Lassen is bit lower.
