- Talleyho69ModeratorEach time before we took it, we stopped near the Y where the road takes off from Palenque, and talked to PFP's. They were able to give us their opinions as to the safety and condition of the road. It is a neat drive.
- reed_cundiffExplorerThink we shall not use Palenque road
- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerA note about the orphanage...
They really appreciate white CFL bulbs and 14/2 Romex wire. When turning off the road to Ocozucuatla the orphanage is a full two miles up the side road on the right side and had a high arch on the entrance. The children were amazingly polite. Was considering a couple hundred cookies for my next trip. A thoroughly enjoyable stop for me. - briansueExplorerJust another bit of map info from Open Street Maps. Last year we drove part of a new road they are building between Oaxaca and Salina Cruz / Tehuantepec. The road is not done yet as far as I know. It will be a quota. When they finish it will make travel between Oaxaca and places like San Cristobal much easier. See the red line on the map that does not join up yet.
- TequilaExplorerBeen a lot of robberies recently on that road, including a bus, best to go the long way around.
- briansueExplorerA couple or few years ago someone posted about an RV park that is actually right in town - I think. They even gave the Lat Lon and you could go on Google Earth to see the place. It is not a big rig place. The street is narrow and the entrance gate is narrow. It is behind a repair shop but on Google Earth you can see in the gate and there were big buses in there and there was a sign by the gate for "TRAILER PARK.
It seems it was too long ago to go back and search on this forum as I was not able to go back that far. Fortunately, I keep an ongoing file of everything I learn about Mexico and I found the info that I found some years ago. I just looked and the Google Earth shot is from 2015 so maybe the place still functions. I think you would have to find a way to contact them to inquire. I just tried both websites listed and neither worked for me.
This is all I have. Have not been so don't know anything else.

Click For Full-Size Image. - Wm_ElliotExplorerWe last were on that road 2 years ago. There were several places where kids had a rope across the road to stop traffic but it wasn't a problem. The road itself is not one to make any good time on - it's rough with some road damage and just a little repair work.
I'd do it again if other options were not available. There aren't a lot of choices in that area. - reed_cundiffExplorerRainbirds and Talleyho - thanks for the thoughts
We have been to Yucatan with TT and 5th wheel a total of 4 times. We got a 2002 Roadrek because of the places you cannot take a 34' 5th wheel in Mexico (and if you do get it there, you might not get back out). We have been told about the orphanage and probably will stay there, but it is more like 2 to 3 hours away by bus. There is (at least was) an RV park in San Cristobal that takes small rigs).
We found the Class B sized Roadtrek worked great for boondocking 9 weeks in Newfoundland and Laabrador. Plan to take it to Haida Gwai this next summer.
What we heard was unfriendly folks that demand money for passage down the road. We have been to Palenque twice and would really enjoy spending time there again.
Mexico Mike has a good write-up on the trip and he seems to suggest doing it and he does talk about the locals wanting passage on the road for a few pesos. He suggests doing Boanapak and Agua Azul on the way. We have seen these befoe and they are worthwhile. Do want to see Yaxchilanarchaeologial site as well.
Thanks
Reed and Elaine - Canadian_RainbiExplorerUs too, then the road was OK but lots of twists and turns and almost NOWHERE to pull off. I thought my bladder was going to burst! Unless you have a small rig I don't think there is anywhere to stay in San Cristobal de las Casas. Not far away, ( An hour or so)in Ocozocoautla there is an orphanage that has room for a couple of rigs, and welcome them at no charge.
- Talleyho69ModeratorProbably been 10 years since we have done it.
