Route from Moab, Utah south to Albuquerque, NM

As stated in subject, we would like to travel highway 191 to I-40 and east to Albuquerque. Any advice on road and things to see or do. Will be traveling end of Sept.

Not sure which way you will decide but two things you should not miss :

    Monument Valley

Acoma Pueblo (Sky City) about 40 miles west of Albuquerque

Four Corners is a waste of time (and money) unless you want to take your picture "standing in 4 states". That takes about 5 minutes. Nothing else anywhere around.

BTW, the monument is about a mile and a half from the actual four corners position.

  • Be sure to watch Stagecoach, one of John Wayne's earliest films. It's available for free on YouTube. It was shot all around the route you'll be taking. Interssting to see how things have not changed much in 75 years.
  • You probably have good reason to follow the route you have noted, and good reason not to follow the route which I would prefer, so I only share this as an alternative.

US 191 to Monticello to take US 491 then US 160 to Durango and on to Pagosa Springs. From Pagosa Springs US 84 to Santa Fe and I-25 to Albuquerque.

The drive from Pagosa Springs to Chama, NM is one of our favorites and Santa Fe is one of our favorite places of all.

On this route you have an embarrassment of riches: Mesa Verde, Durango and the Narrow gauge railway, Pagosa Springs, Chama, and Santa Fe.

As I recognized in the beginning, you may have reason not to follow this route, but it just happens to be one of our favorites in our RV travels of many years.
  • You could go east from Monticello to Cortez, Co. then down to Shiprock. Still goes close to 4 corners. If you aren't in a hurry, Mesa Verde is just a few miles east of town.
  • Drove 191 last September and it was fine. I recommend turning east at Ganado and going thru Window Rock to Gallup. It was a good road too and will save you a few miles over staying on 191 to 40.

Last September, I found the gas prices on the reservation to be LOWER than off the reservation.

Couple of Good stops Mexican Hat - just to see.

Monument Valley - Catch a sunrise.

Canyon de Chelly - take the tour.

Window Rock - and visit the Navajo capital

    I-40 and Albuquerque

    Enjoy the drive,
  • 4 corners is among my favorite areas of the country. Roads are pretty good.

You can either take 191 all the way down to 40, or cut over to Shiprock and down on 491 to 40. The first way you pass Chinle and Ganado, both worth a stop, but that road is pretty desolate. The Shiprock route is a bit busier, and you can visit the 4 corners monument for about 15 minutes! I've also run 550 from Farmington to north of Albuquerque, and that was also a neat drive.

Either way, fuel up at Moab or Monticello. Fuel out on the reservation was not cheap last time I went through there.
