- LaurenExplorerNot sure what "West Phoenix" means but you get down the Hwy 60 (aka Superstition Hwy) and take that all the way to Globe where it joins with the Hwy 77 to Show Low. At Show Low you stay on the 77 to Holbrook.
About half way between Globe and Show Low you will go thru the Salt River Canyon and have some steep, curvy down and up. Lots of guard rail and I personally do not think it is that bad - some others do - and I am on the conservative side when talking "mountain" driving. It is tight at the bottom and can be crowded with tourists on a weekend. - darsbenExplorer III bet he was talking AZ 87N to 260E to 277 to 377 to Holbrook. I have done the route a couple of times. I think it an okay route, scenic in the day time
- JaneNLeeExplorerThanks for your responses.

I did it many times, Camp Verde had only 10 miles pave to the east. But that was 1969
Had a traveler once tell us of a route from West Phoenix AZ on non-Interstate route that will go to Int at Holbrook AZ or city East on Int 40.
Does anyone know of this route?
Thanks in advance. - LaurenExplorerdarsben - think you might be right. That, also, is a pretty drive.
- Golden_HVACExplorerHi,
I have gone north out of Gilbert towards Payson, then on to Holbrook. It is a good road, goes over some higher elevations, but still less elevation that going through Flagstaff. Not a bad road while towing my car with my 30' gas motorhome.

This is a very popular route for RVers - lots of forest service campgrounds along Hwy 87. From Mesa you'll be going toward Payson. It's very easy to drive but it's busy. Try to do it during the week, if possible to avoid the weekend rush. Have a good trip! - rfryerExplorerCould be a couple of routes. both mentioned by Lauren and darsben. Route 60 to Showlow and 77 is probably a slightly better road, but as said you have to cross Salt River canyon. About 10 miles of grades and switchbacks and if you don’t like mountain driving it may bother you. Also it’s mountain road, i.e., hills and curves, from Superior to Miami with a tunnel.
87/260/377 are good roads, maybe a little narrower than the other route. You’ll have a lot of up and down to Payson and then a good climb up on the rim at Christopher Creek. Other than that pretty straightforward. Either route will likely take you longer than I-17 to I-40, but they’re interesting drives off the freeway. This is not the route to take Friday through Sunday, though. As it warms up there will be a lot of traffic back and forth to the mountains. - TyroneandGladysExplorer

The way to go. I travel from Chandler to SE Colorado 3 to 6 times a year and have done so for over 10 years and that is the best route hands down. And yes I have tried the others. - mileshuffExplorerI much prefer taking 87, 260, 277, 377 through Payson rather than 60 through Show Low. 87 was redone a few years ago and most of it is now 4 lane divided. Very good road. 87 does have some long uphill grades but they are fairly straight shots while 60 has some narrow, winding sections along with steep grades. 260, 277, 377 are mostly 2 lane but very good well traveled routes, mostly flat. I find the Payson route to be faster and an easier drive. Rather scenic too as it reaches the forested mountains sooner.
