Regarding Route 17
North of the NY/NJ border in the Village of Harriman, NY there is a railroad bridge that is very low. The RR line is a spur that goes to an abandoned factory. There used to be a sign on the bridge that said clearance 12' 4'' but it is not there now. I am not sure of the exact clearance but 18 wheelers can't get under it.
You can bypass this bridge very easily. From NJ/NY state line take the NY State Thruway North (I-87) to Exit 16. At that point you can rejoin 17. This small section of Route 17 in the Village of Harriman has been a pain to tall vehicles for at least 50 years.
Other than this bridge, this is a good road.
