Southern Indiana to Central Maine

I am new to RV's,towing and rv.net, but very enthusiastic about the new friends and experiences ahead. We are heading from Bloomington, IN to near Dixfield, ME, towing a 5th wheel. In previous years we took a northern route to avoid large cities and crowded interstates. I am interested any any route suggestions, avoidance recommendations or inputs from more experienced travelers. I hope to make the trip in three days or less because I don't know any better. Many thanks - in advance.

  • Thanks kknowlton, gbopp, Matt and Adirondackjack for the good info and also all of the readers. As a rookie at towing a 5th wheeler, should I plan to stay on Interstates as much as possible? Or not be concerned about getting onto the 2-lane state roads?
  • We do NY and New England to Indianapolis & Bloomington every Fall to visit family on our way South. The best route we have found so far that we would take (reversing it for you) would be:
Take 37 from Bloomington to 475 around Indy, then
I-70 East to Columbus, OHio, then
Take I-71 North to I-90 toward Conneaut, Ohio
Take I-90 just across the NY Border and pick up I-86 to Binghamton
Then I-88 from Binghamton, NY to Schenectady, NY
    I-88 to I-90 to I-87N
    I-87N to Exit 7. Follow NY-7E to VT-9 to I-91N
I-91N to I-93 and you should have it pinned down from there.
We have used this route as far as Ascutney, VT.
    Total this route: 1,161 miles

We have found great campgrounds for stopovers along the way:
Marengo, Ohio (259 miles from Bloomington)
Conneaut, OH (178 miles from Marengo)
Campbell, NY (208 miles from Conneaut)
Ascutney, VT (332 miles from Campbell)

Send me a note if you want further info. The campgrounds are posted on our website at

  • Without more clarification, I will a route we have used going east. You have to start by realising that the megapolis is right along the coast, so that is where yo do not want to be. I am in Michigan, but you would want to look at heading for Cleveland via Columbus. When close to Cleveland, target I-271 and take that to I-90. When you pass Erie (PA) shift to I-86. Take that to I-81 then I-88 to Schenectady. There will be a short fight through Albany/Troy and then you have to decide if you want scenic or the Ma$$ Pike. If you like scenic, you want to head out of Troy on 7/9 to at least Keene. Then there are state roads that will take you to Nashua. Then make you way to I-95 at Windham and now you can work interstates (I'm sketchy) to I-95. If you don't want the toll road, drop off I-95 before New Hampshire and switch to Rt-1. Rt-1 is not a fast road, but it is scenic most of the way and you can always elect to pay the tolls and go back to I-95.

  • When you say northern route, do you mean Interstate 80 across Pennsylvania to I-81 north and then I-84 east into New England?

I think that's the best route for avoiding city traffic.

When traveling in Pennsylvania, expect road construction/repairs.
  • Well, 3 days or less isn't my speed, but anyway - you might look into I-70 into at least western Maryland/Pennsylvania. After that, you'll be stuck with turnpike tolls on many roads. I-80 across PA will avoid some of that. Can't advise much more - we just sucked it up & paid.
