There's an old and relative saying: "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6". In today's violent and irresponsible America you have to be a complete fool to not have the means to defend yourself. Under the US constitution a citizen has the right to own a legal weapon and to defend themselves against aggression. If you are not comfortable with a handgun in your RV then, by all means, have a shotgun or rifle available. Also, another thing to think about. Many people take RV's out into the wilderness. How are you going to protect yourself against wild animals, many of which have no fear of humans. Good luck with a baseball bat or pepper spray against either drugged out thugs or a Mountain Lion.
I am sorry, but I have to say that this is just complete and utter BS.
The animals you encounter ARE wary and afraid of Humans They react out of FEAR and feeling cornered or their young put in danger. If you follow some very simple rules about food and garbage you are very very unlikely to have any close encounters with any animal at all. This crazy idea that you need guns to defend yourself is just too much. It is really nothing but fear based in ignorance.
And the others are right this is about Canada's laws not the US.
As for protection:
In 1993 the violent crime rate was 747 per 100,000. Yes ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND. In 2015 that same rate is at 372 per 100,000 That is nearly halving the violent crime rate.
You have a better chance of being struck by lightening. Despite the bleatings of the radio talking heads and other sources. The FACTS are you are safer now than under Presidents George Bush or Bill Clinton.
And this trend has been declining steadily over the years.
