- RICK-ards_RedExplorerI live in Thunder Bay, I would recommend a visit to Fort William Historical park, it is the best in Canada. Kakabeka Falls is a good stop as well, lots of water going over the falls right now. Take Hwy 11 as it has less traffic and transports to deal with than Hwy 17. Then take Hwy 71 after a little town of Emo, this Hwy has beautiful scenery. The town of Kenora on the shores of the Lake of the Woods is very pretty in the summer.
Hope you enjoy the beauty of the area and bring fly dope!:)

We went here for the kids, but ended up enjoying it quite a lot ourselves. - RangerJayExplorerTaking the Highway 11 route you will enjoy a night or two in Quetico Provincial Park at Dawson Trail Campground - this is the only car campground in the Park. If you are paddlers then an extended canoe trip in the park is pretty much a natural choice for some solitude, adventure and fishing. There are several other Provincial Parks on the way to Kenora - Caliper and Sioux Narrows Parks are both operated by the town of Sioux Narrows. Closer to Kenora is Rushing River Provincial Park - it's very popular during the summer months so reservations are a good idea. The Ontario Parks website will give you more detail on each Provincial Park and give you access to reservations:

You don't say how you are going to make a loop back. One suggestion you might want to think about is to go a little farther than Winnipeg before heading south back into the U.S. and take in International Peace Garden:

Peace Garden is located directly on the International Boundary between the U.S. and Canada Border Crossings - managed by both the Province of Manitoba and the State of North Dakota. There is a campground on site. You can easily spend a full day there. If you haven't been there before it is a place you will not regret visiting.
Enjoy your trip.
Jay - TripalotExplorerWe enjoy stopping at Whiteshell P.P. - Falcon Beach C.G. is the area we prefer.
It is a Manitoba P.P. and so much cheaper than Ontario P.P. The sites are full hook up with WIFI available, good store, laundry, fast food restaurants all within walking distance. Also there are nice bicycle trails if you have bikes with you. Check it out. - almccExplorerThe above suggestions about Quetico and the other former PP's on 11 are good. We generally do a "speed run" on 17 between TB and the "Peg" but Sandbar Lake PP just north of Ignace is a nice stop, There also is Davy lake campground in Ignace for a short overnighter.
Vermilion Bay west of Dryden has a very nice private park right on a lake with full services and great facilities for kids, we spend a few days each year with the grand kids there.
The web address is crystallakecampground.ca, the URL link isn't working for me today.
We stay at Travelers RV just off the Trans Canada in east Winnipeg before we head to Riding Mountain national Park, it's a great place but it's busy after July 1, hard to get a full service site in town. - rr2254545ExplorerWonderful help - Riding Mountain is just what we love - We plan to leave the first of September and be gone about a month

That is a very nice time of year to travel in Northern Ontario. If you plan to stay in any provincial parks, you should check to see if they are open. I suspect several will shut down after Labor Day. Private parks should be open though.
