Towing Lake Placid to Rome NY

We are currently in Lake Placid. Heading to Old Forge next, then on to the Finger Lakes.
Wondering about towing (30 ft 5er ) to Old Forge and then on to the Finger Lakes. Coming into Lake Placid from the 87 on 73 wasn't bad. Are the roads to Old Forge and on any worse. I do know they are grinding 86 near Saranac Lake, put that should not be an issue other than a slight delay.
  • Where in the Finger Lakes? There are a few low overpasses in our area. We love both Lake Placid and Old Forge areas. Old Forge is typically our last outing of the year in late Oct. Last year, almost 8 inches of snow while we were there... Good luck, Mike
  • In the finger lakes I expect to be towing on rt 20 and down along Seneca, not sure which side on the way to Watkins Glen.
We are just under 12 ft.
  • Just got home from 11 days in the Adirondacks around Lake Placid and Wilmington. We stayed at North Pole Resort. Did a lot of hiking, biking and site seeing. It was our first time visiting the area. What a beautiful area We can't wait to go back again sometime!!

6 of one, half dozen of the other... I would take RT 20 into Waterloo and then just before Geneva, go left on 96a to 414. That takes you down the east side. Or go into Geneva and take 14 down the west side. I like the ride on the east side, but it really doesn't matter much.

We were at Sampson St Park on the east side last weekend to check out the Tin Can Tourist Rally - 50+ vintage campers and a lot of interesting characters. Pretty cool. Sampson also has a really nice milatary museum that documents the history of the Navy and Air Force training centers that were there before it was a park. They only ask for $1 admission - very worth it if you have time, And we hit out 2 favorite wineries - Lamoreaux Landing and Chateau Lafayette. Both on the east side - but don't take the camper. Very few of the wineries have easy access with an RV.

Stay warm! Been unusually cold at night lately. We have reservations in Old Forge for mid-October. Might take the ski's

Actually, I thought they beat the Russians in the semi-final round, and then had to face Finland for the gold. In any case, Lake Placid is in New York, and other states as well. :D
  • At 12 feet, you should be fine. I am at 13'6" and have to take non-direct routes a few places... Enjoy your visit, Mike
  • Heading to Lake Placid from Ohio this summer in our 35ft Toyhauler.

Looking to take 81 North and cut across Rt 3 to the Lake Placid area ( KOA ).

Does anyone know if Rt3 is a decent trip pulling a rig?

    Thanks
  • I would suggest getting off of 5&20 in Seneca Falls pick up 414 in Seneca Falls then on into Watkins. 414 is the East side of the lake 14 is the west side. 14 is actually a more scenic drive but there is bridge construction going on in Geneva that will make maneuvering a rig unpleasant.
The other suggested route 96A has an underpass that may be a bit low.
12'11" I think. I go under it every day but I don't recall the exact signage.
In any case you can get 414 South in Seneca Falls or 96 South in Waterloo.
If you are at all interested The Womans Hall of Fame and Historical Park is in downtown SF although there is nothing but on street parking.
When you go into Watkins Glen make darn sure that you are right at 30 MPH when you hit village limits.
There is a lot of Amish buggy traffic on all of the roads in the Finger Lakes so be aware.
    Thank you for visiting NY!
  • I did not realize someone had resurrected an old post and piggy backed onto it. I should read the Post dates.
My advice stands,if you are traveling through NY on 5&20 414,96 are the best ways to get to Watkins Glen right now.
