Two part question about Sequoia NP

Our daughter is thinking about renting a Class C MH and going to Sequoia with our grandchildren, probably in the spring.

How difficult is the road in for someone who has no experience driving a large vehicle? Is the road steep and winding or is it fairly flat?

Is there one campground that is in a nicer location inside the park that you would recommend as far as ease of accessibility, hiking, and of course bathrooms.

Thanks for any suggestions you have.
  • Since she doesn't have any experience with driving a large rig, one thing that may work out better is to rent a cabin. May actually be cheaper overall too.
  • The southern entrance to the park is easily negotiable and you can get to the campground with no problem. However, if you continue uphill (north) to see some of the attractions of the park, the road is quite narrow, steep and winding. It's even more so if you continue into Kings Canyon.

I would just rent a cabin and drive into the park rather than put up with manhandling a big rig. It would probably be less expensive as well.
  • The southern entrance is hwy 198 and has a length limit due to switchbacks but most likely applies to trailer type rv's. The northern entrance is hwy 180 and it has no such length limit. It would depend on her confidence level in driving a bigger vehicle. As a first timer, driving a class c on winding road will be intimidating. If she decides to go, Lodgepole campground is a nice one. The Kings river runs along the campground and there are nearby hikes.
  • She would be better off doing the car rental and cabin, just fly into Fresno rent the car and up 180 stay in Kings Canyon, then no motorhome to horse around to see the sights. If this means anything, nobody in a motorhome will say great road, but 198 is a great motorcycle ride.

Fresno Tundra, Marble Fork of the Kaweah river not Kings River, nice place.

Very true, in fact, the kindest thing I can say about it in a car is, Interesting, or :E
  • Thanks for your responses. They mirror my feelings about going into the mountains with an RV on her first trip.
