US 421, US 321 & US 19 in Western NC & Eastern TN

I will be heading to Bluff City, TN from Raleigh, NC in June. My Trailer Life routing program has me going US 421, US 321 and US 19 in Western NC and Eastern TN. I am towing a 37' fiver. On the map, this route looks very curvy and possibly steep going through the mountains.
Has anyone traveled these routes in NC & TN? How is this route? I am considering a different route as I prefer not driving on an old US highway that is steep and curvy when towing my fiver.

  • Having drove through there, towing I would stay on the interstates. Either catch 77 up to 81 and down to Bristol/Blountville exit, or take 40 to 26 in Asheville and take 11E in Johnson City to Bluff City. If you are staying at Lake View in Bluff City, nice park.
  • A good grade from Wilkesboro to Boone? That is an understatement. I lived there.
  • You should not have any problems, done that drive many times. Just need to take it easy West of Boone on 321. There is one tunnel in that general area that is hazmat restricted, which may include propane, but I dont think it's on any of those roads. Think it's 11E in Tennesee
  • A good resource is Mountain Directory East (or West out west).
  • I drove this route last summer. Compared to some other NC driving is was pretty tame. One good uphill grade between Wilksboro and Boone. No problems at all on 321 from Boone into TN. Was a pretty drive with very little traffic. Road was a little skinny on some stretches but overall it wasn't a bad drive at all.
