Western Trip - Redwoods and Hwy 101 vs 1

In the continuation of the prior post about an earlier leg, we are also looking at running down the coast from WA to as far as the Hurst Castle. Will try to get through SF as fast as possible (grin!). Redwoods Highway will be part of the list. As we go further south, will Hwy 1 or 101 be better choices (pulling a 5th wheel)? Any areas to avoid, and/or will be tough to get a site? Any hidden gems we should make sure to make time for?

  • South of Fortuna off Hwy 101 is Avenue of the Giants. Stay at Ancient Redwoods RV park for a couple of days. Lots to see in this area. One of my favorite area for short easy walks among the big trees.

Route suggestion. Continue south on Hwy 101 then Hwy 20 around Clear Lake to Williams and I-5. From there good run down to I-80 through Sacramento and points east. Or, stay on Hwy 20 and take the scenic slower route to I-80 (around Emigrant Gap). If you stay on Hwy 20, make reservations to stay in Grass Valley at the Nevada County fair grounds, located near Hwy 20 and Hwy 49. Grass Valley is a neat little town.
  • WELL! That decides it then - 101 it is, and we'll look for base camps off of that to spend a few days in an area, that can then include Hwy 1 in just the TV.

DW painfully decided to eliminate Hust this trip as we might be overdoing it, so will look at concentrating to areas north of SF.
  • I got my Master's degree in towing last fall going south on Highway 1 into Fort Bragg, CA. It was the toughest tow of my life and many times on right hand curves I had to cross into the opposite lane to have room for the back of my 31' trailer to clear the hillside.

We were on Highway 1 south of San Fran down to the Hearst Castle on our motorcycles and while curvy and hilly, it was much better than the northern part of the highway.
  • Just did the Redwoods and Grants Pass, Crater Lake. See my blog in my signature for details of trip and campgrounds.

And the 101 in the RV and Hwy 1 in the car or truck.

It was a great trip enjoy.
  • Just ran the coast from Seattle to south of SF

I ran HW 1 in the car and glad I did not try it in the MH - especially nasty from FT Bragg to Leggett

The state of California even has official restriction on some of it - see their web site
