What is the condition of 99 in CA?

I thought I had posted this but I guess it didn't go through. We are starting in Las Vegas and plan to end up in Washington then across the top of the country (with maybe a couple of side trips into Canada) to New York to visit my daughter who has ALS.

We have to stay away from altitudes above 4k because I have emphysema and don't do well up there. Plus we DO like the seafood we hope to find along 101.

I'm sort of stuck in Washington, though, because I'm not sure how big a rig can go on the ferries across the sounds/water. Decisions, decisions! But I sure am glad there's a board where I can go (here) to get knowledgable information. Thanks all!

Because of emphysema, I do have to avoid some of the altitudes along 395. Thanks for the suggestion, though. We want to work our way over to 101 because we love the ocean sights and seafood! We will be starting in Las Vegas and ending up in Washington from where we'll be heading east across the top of the country.

It all depends on where you are starting and ending your trip. If you are going to eastern Oregon, or even central Oregon, I like US395. It has routes that split off to go to various parts of the state and still misses most of the traffic in California. Its a more pleasant drive than anything on the west side of the Sierras. Even though most of it is a 2 lane highway, the traffic moves along quickly.

We don't want to do the altitude and campgrounds are few and far between along 395. We're going to do I-15, a short bit of 99, and then over to 101. Heard that's an absolutely beautiful drive.

We go along the Hwy 101 corridor as much as possible. It is more scenic and more places to stop along the way for fuel and food - good food.

From Bakersfield we take Hwy 58 west to Hwy 101 and come out around Paso Robles in the wine country. It also puts us with minutes of the Pacific Ocean.

I agree! 395 is a very beautiful and scenic drive along the eastern escarpment. We've taking our travel trailer many times & made base camp in the June Lakes area & drove our vehicle into Yosemite and made a day of it. I'm not too sure what you're driving or hauling but there may be limitations. Also, We've driven numerous times via HWY 99 with our TT & road construction is on going in Tulare & Madera Counties. After Stockton, it should be fine.

I was thinking the same thing. It might be a longer route but it's beautiful and so worth the extra time it takes. I'm a native Californian but I didn't see the Eastern side of the Sierra Mtns until I was an adult. I kept exclaiming to my husband.....how come no one ever told me about this?

The 99 isn't bad from bakersfield to fresno. There is a lot of road repair going on around lodi at the 99. North of lodi I dont know. At 28 miles south of fresno, on the 99, be sure to stop at bravo farms for lunch and a look around. Its in the town of traver.
