- HalmfamilyExplorerOak Mtn SP is one of our favorite places to visit with Desoto SP a close second. Oak Mountains campground is not at any elevation, actually sits in a bowl. Driving or hiking to Pevine Falls is beahtiful.
Desotos drive to the top and coming back down the first time I was alittle nervous but the campground is fantastic with lofs to see all around. One of our yearly visits.
Cheaha SP is our favorite, of course I'm biased as I live in the National Forest only 15 miles from the top. I've never camped there but looking at their campground it would be a little bit of a challenge getting our 40' in there. The climb from 431 to the top is not for the faint of heart. Long climb up but worth the visit. Many waterfalls, great trails and views and a couple small caves if know where to go.
Have fun and come visit. - GraciesDaddyExplorerExcellent suggestions here. FYI: Mt. Cheaha IS the highest point in Alabama. Oak Mtn. gets mixed reviews from RVPR... It depends upon the section of the CG you're in.
Once you have your fill of mountains — and it gets a bit warmer! — head down to Alexander City and Wind Creek State Park... Bring your boat(s)! It's right on Lake Martin (of the "famed" Acapulco Rock jumping off point) with 44,000 acres of water, you can fish and boat and wakeboard and ski your guts out! The park has been renno'd to include a new batch of FHU/50A waterfront sites! I think if you sweet talk the hosts a bit, you can get a site at which you can tie up your boat... right out the front door to your rig!
That's MY kinda place! - lizzieExplorerWe like Cheaha and Desota. Both are on mountaintops with beautiful scenery but Desota has more attractions nearby.
- mikestockExplorerOak Mountain SP campground is not really on a mountain. It is located at the base of the mountain. If you are thinking about a higher elevation campground Cheaha SP, DeSoto SP and Monte Sano just about cover it, for Alabama.

Outstanding park. - Johno02ExplorerMt Sano in Huntsville it OK, but it is a long pull up the mountain. DeSoto is our choice.
- LOWELL731ExplorerAll Al state parks that I have been to are very nice. Call the park you chose to check on storm damage before you go. I know desoto has fixed their problems and is a very nice park. Guntersville had a very bad storm a few years back and some has been repaired but may take a long time to come back to what it was.
Lowell - ependydadExplorerI second the vote for Monte Sano State Park, but I haven't been at any other campground in Alabama.

Just a few miles up I59 from there near Trenton GA is CLOUDLAND CANYON State Park up on the same LOOKOUT MTN area. It also is one of our favorite places to go...
Also several years back CHEAHA State Park was noteworthy. It has now become very popular and somewhat crowed... Especially when the NASCAR folks are in town...
