Beach camping in (probably) North Carolina

I'm looking for a beach campground probably in North Carolina (or maybe the Virginia Beach area). We went to Hunting Island a few years ago and loved it, but there were more people with us. This time it looks like it will just be me, the 17 year old boy, and perhaps one of his friends. The boy is not into crowds, golf carts and putt-putt - he's more of a nature kid.

Suggestions?
  • Nature...either Huntington Beach SP or Edisto Island SP. Myrtle is a bit of a zoo.
  • Since he's a nature boy, how about one of the national campgrounds on the outer banks.
  • What you are describing is the Outer Banks. We go there twice a year and stay at Camp Hatteras. The KOA is right next door. Also a good choice.
  • Camp Hatteras in NC is right on the beach. One side of the CG is on the ocean and the other side is on the sound. Right next door is the Hatteras KOA, recently rebuilt after suffering hurricane damage a couple of years ago.

It's about dead center in the strand. You can drive north up to Currituck and see the wild horses and Kitty Hawk.

Or you can drive south and catch the ferry boat over to Ocracoke Island, and enjoy the wildlife and light house climb along the way.
  • Have you considered the Outer Banks? Several good campground choices out there, plus lighthouses to climb (some) and several nautical oriented museums.

You could do a search on this forum for lots more details.
  • South Carolina would work too...Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll look into them. I think my camper used to go to Lakewood a lot when my neighbors had it. It still has a bumper sticker from there.

I too was going to suggest Myrtle Beach camping but noticed you did state maybe NC... We visit nags head alot from here in Northern Neck usually in a family group at a rental house but have never really camped down there. There are several camp grounds however on the otter banks.

My sister has a place at LAKEWOOD RESORTS and we remaining kids all head down that way in the late SEP early Oct time frame for yearly family reunion. I always go down to Huntington Beach and hang out wishing I was setup there haha... It is a great camping location near the Ocean... Great trails and lots of wildlife...

As stated above you are not right in the middle of heavy tourism traffic but close enough to make the rounds... Easy in and out with your RV...

I always pull my off-road POPUP down to Lakewood Resorts but we usually stay in one of the Villa's there where other family members stay. Then on the way back to VA we go the Smokey Mtn route thru Gatlinburg and do two or three days there as well. All of our roads usually go thru Gatlingburg haha...

  • Might look into Huntington Beach State Park, south of Myrtle Beach, SC. http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/huntingtonbeach/introduction.aspx
Great nature trails, excellent beach (CG NOT beachfront but nothing between CG and the ocean except natural habitat!) Quiet setting, large sites, part of park is animal sanctuary (birders love it and alligators in the marsh!). Less than 130 sites so not too big either. No putt-putt, no glitz, just a nice campground. Far enough removed from honky-tonk of MB but close to whatever you might need. Awesome Brookgreen Gardens directly across the highway from park entrance - if he loves nature, that's a great place to be (It's an artists' colony as well. Sculpture garden, etc - very enjoyable for everyone). Highly recommend. DH and I camp there at least 10 times a year!
  • Have you checked out Myrtle Beach State Park? Beautiful beach, close enough to mini golf, shopping, but when you are in the park you feel removed from the "action". It is close to the airport, but we have never found it to be an issue. See if it suits your needs. Good luck!
