Veebyes - If your not getting permission from the Rangers first, then you're part of the problem. There is no "Line in the Sand" that gives you permission to cut trees and makes the "other" guy illegal. I can tell you that in Michigan, in state parks and such, you absolutely can not cut on a live tree under any circumstances. There are no exceptions.
Pirate - I am assuming it was a private campground. The Manager has a good point (to you it was bla, bla, bla). What he was probably trying to tell you in the nicest way possible that you are not the first camper that ever tried to go down that road. Maybe you are just not a good "fit" for that campground. He may like his trees better than your business; that is his prerogative. Your decision is whether to go somewhere more size accommodating or stay. If it was a publicly owned campground - see above.
