Sadly you might need to come back another year, and you can see it without the heavy smoke.
Some parts of highway 395 have been closed from time to time as well.
If you do end up in Grants Pass, there is a jet boat ride down the Rouge River, and it is great. They sell the tickets at the hotel on 7th, near the Rouge River Bridge.
