Finally have made vacation choice!! Need Help, Please!

Ok have changed ideas for vacation a few times and this is norm for us!! We have decided to go 2nd 2 weeks in June and do the Rockey Mountain National Park, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Ok so going to try and get site at moraine for a couple of nights but I need to know time needed in each of these parks. We like to hike but not more than 6 miles round trip, cause Dh bad knees. We like to view wild life and bike ride. We don't need hook ups have a generator. I need route ideas and campgrounds. Remember my Dh really likes me to do all planning so Every Vacation I have taken everyone's kind advice and suggestions from this forum and have always had great vacations! So thanks everyone for all your help for the past years. We have a 36ft 5th wheel so that might help for route and campground suggestions. Thanks in advance for the help!!! Tara

  • Given the distance and reasonable time needed for travel, we'd also suggest you choose either RMNP or YNP/GTNP.

ALL of these parks are at a high elevation, much of the area is over 8000'.
We are active but find that it takes a day for our bodies to adjust to the increased elevation and have our normal level of stamina.

You will find your two weeks will be full with great hikes and sights to see.

Looking at the park maps, YNP and RMNP are not small parks. It takes more time than you would think to get anywhere, during the height of the season.
  • Once you deduct the approx. 6 days of driving out and back you will have about 8 days to sight see. That's very little time but enough to allow you to see lots of great sights. I suggest you spend a couple of those in Grand Teton and stay at Gros Ventre. Then go north into YNP where you can stay at Lewis Lake (first come, no reservations) or Grant (reserve thru Xanterra) or Madison. Any of the campgrounds in Yellowstone will fill by 9-10 AM and many of them by 8-8:30 AM.
  • Oxbow Bend in the Tetons is considered one of the 10 best for viewing wild life. DW's favorite spot. Has a ranger with spotting scope in the afternoon. Don't dismiss the Tetons. We do one week in GTNP and one week in YNP. On our travel day I went up RV ladder because of grizzly. Two weeks is not enough for all three parks.
  • From Indiana to RMNP you are looking at 2 long days driving. From there to YNP/Teton you are looking at another long days drive. And from YNP back to Indiana is another 3 long days driving. By long days, I mean in excess of 8 hours actual driving time plus any rest/food/fuel stops per day. (Per google maps and assuming Indianapolis) Right off you are losing at least 6 days to travel. That leaves 8 days (3 each for RMNP and YNP and 2 for Teton?) with no time for any rest. Doable? Yes. Enjoyable? Decide for yourself.
  • We did a 2 weeks for Yellowstone and Tetons, seemed ok. Did we see all of it, no. Did we see enough? Yes. I wouldn't plan on any biking unless you are super serious road bikers, as after all, it's all in the mountains! We could have used a couple more days in the Tetons.

We stayed at Grant and Madison in Yellowstone, in the Tetons stayed at Coulter Bay for 4 days. Rest was split between 2 in Yellowstone.

We did Rocky mountain last July. It was a 2 week trip, but only spent 1 week at RMNP. The rest of the time was in Colorado Springs, Mesa Verde, The Great Sand Dune and the Grand Canyon of Colorado. A week was enough for RMNP for us. We stayed at the Timber Creek campground on the west side of the park. Had Elk and a Cow Moose with a baby in the campground. First come first served, no reservations.
  • It's worth a couple of nights if you take the ferry across Lake Jenny and do some hikes. Great scenery and lots of critters-moose, bears ect. I looked at the Moraine CG reviews a couple of weeks ago and they are awful. So I don't know what to recommend as a CG. You can daytrip from YNP but it's a long -slow- drive both ways. Traffic in YNP is always bad the speed limits are low, people stop in the middle of the road anytime someone spots a chipmunk or something larger, and the Park Service is always repairing some parts of the roads. Always the part that you need to drive over, of course.

Do you know about RVParkreview.com? That's one of the best ways to check out campgrounds in any area.
  • agesilaus, is Grand tetons worth a couple of nights stay or more of a drive thru?
  • OK number one: two weeks is not enough time for RMNP and YNP/GTNP. I suggest you pick one or the other. Don't forget you'll have to subtract travel time to and from Indiana. Two days to RMNP or three days to the YNP area. And if you try to do both there would be a two day drive between the parks.

You could then spend a week +/- in one area or the other. A week isn't really enough time in Yellowstone. A week in RMNP is enough to see most of the park and do some hiking. Both parks have great trails.

I just checked out RMNP CG for next June and they are booked up already. So you would have to stay in a private CG in Estes Park. I haven't checked YNP but it's probably also booked up. YNP does have some first come/first served no-hookup CG so that's a possibility. But if you show up and don't find an open site then you may have a problem finding a spot at the private CG's in the area.
